Can I use a roof shingle for my walking board up to the coop? Can I use pool filter sand to put on ground so the can clean themselves in it? And last but not least I have two coops because the one is to small for all six. I am just randomly picking three to put in each night should it be the same three? They can't get to it by themselves because it has no traction on the board up to the coop yet. It is just a plain wood board. Hope someone can help:)

I think roof shingles would be like sand paper to their little feet - I wouldn't recommend it. Not to mention all the nasty chemicals in roof shingles.

I don't know about the pool filter sand.

I would keep the same 3 in the same coop because it helps to comfort them when they sleep in the same spot every night (and it also is a comfort to sleep with their same buddies). Try to pay attention to the pecking order they have established and keep the lower end 3 together and the higher end 3 together.

You can get a cheap stick of 1x2 at the store, cut it up and drill it onto the plank to make steps (do them about 2" apart)

It should probably be the same 3 in each coop. Just so they aren't getting stressed from sleeping in a new place every night.

I wouldn't use roof shingles I would assume it wouldn't be good for their feet, but I'm not 100% on that one. You can use DE/pool filter sand but I wouldn't use the pool supply one cause that would have chemicals in it since it is for the pool? But you can buy untreated ones at farm supply but I read you need to mix it cause it can harm their lungs if it is just DE. I personally used all purpose sand from Lowe's and they like it. And I used do the 3 same chicks each time.

Hope this helps!!
