Can chickens eat soybeans?

Since commercial feed is up to 30% soybean meal, we have to assume they can.
Soybeans contain antinutrients that interfere with digestion. Treating them with heat apparently overcomes this problem.

My chickens LOVE soybeans. They fight over them and even remove them from the shell. It's hysterical to watch...
and geese and ducks and guineas do too.. my neighbor planted soybeans all around my homestead and the birds took care of the first 10 feet along the property line..LOL
the woodchucks and deer and rabbits took care of the opposite edge of the field..LOL
If a chicken can swallow it, it is a meal.. Once when we butchered some chickens, we found a half digested quarter in one chicken.. don't ask me how he swallowed it.. and another time we found 4d nails in some geese's gizzards.. again, don't ask..LOL

Soybeans contain something called Trypsin Inhibitor. Trypsin is an enzyme that is secreated by the pancreas of animals that aids in digestion. The inhibitor counter acts that trypsin and recuces the ability to digest foods when in the animals system. High heating of the beans and or oil for human consumption destroys the inhibitors and allows us to eat it.
That said, I cant for the life of me remember if chickens have a pancrease or not. I know though that wild phesants and ducks and geese FEAST on beans on their fall migrations. Upshot? Feed em as is but in moderation to fowl. NOT to hogs or goats or cows though...

Chickens cannot eat soybeans unless they are processed. In fact, if you fed your chickens nothing but dried soybeans, they would starve to death. This is due to the presence of trypsin inhibitors in the soybeans. soybean meal has been chemically treated to destroy the enhibitor. you can heat the soybeans by boiling in water or cook at hight heat in the oven and then they are consumable and quite high in protein. I get free soybeans from a local tempeh maker. i boil them in water for a 10 minutes and then let them sit till they cool. then i feed
Hmmm. So you don't think that making tempeh is enough of a "processing" to make them edible for the chickens? A friend tells me that if the soybean is "fermented" as in the making of tempeh that it removes the trypsin inhibitors. I haven't a clue and am truly curious about what you think. I don't even know what happens when tempeh is made, never even eaten tempeh ... I don't think.
