Does anyone feed their chickens alfalfa bales from TSC? I'm wanting to give them a variety of food other than their normal feed. Do I need to do anything to prepare the alfalfa or just place the bale in their run for them to pick at? Thanks in advance

I give mine dairy quality alfalfa. Lots of leaves and finer stems. Typically a later cutting in the summer. I just place the entire bale strings not cut in the run ao it's just as much a toy as it is food.

There are a couple of things you could get from TSC - are you looking at the smaller "bales" sold for pet use (ie rabbits, etc), the compressed bales (40-50 pound "bricks") sold in the livestock feed area or larger, standard 2-3 string square bales that would be used for feeding livestock?

I want the ones to feed my chickens. I just want something with quality for them

I get mine either from the farmer or at hay auctions. I buy way too much to get it at the feed store. Hay quality is all over the place. Look for green, sweet smelling, fine stem (thin like a straw broom), lots of leaves, no purple or white flowers (mature) hay. They will pick through and eat the leaves and if they're lucky a grasshopper or 3. If you have a pile of stems they won't touch, just scoop them up and put them in the nesting boxes.

Thank you for the input. I'll look for a local farmer that bales their own and buy a couple bales.
