I'm new here, so I'll introduce myself. I'm dolfan87 (Miami Dolphins fan) and I am 43 years old. I have two boys ages 15 and 5 (ooops) and a week before Easter we bought 6 Golden Sex Links from Tractor Supply.

Our girls are about 11 weeks old now, and yesterday I went out to the coop to check on them and only counted five out eating. Looked inside and one of our girls was just laying there and wouldn't move. Long story short she somehow broke her right leg about a half inch below her hock (non compound thank God). I immediately checked the forums here for advice, and we have her splinted up with a padded finger splint cut to size, and a coband holding it all together.

She is in a box in our house, but I'm wondering if we need to start any antibiotics? She is eating wet finisher scratch, and pecking at a fresh corn on the cob, and pooping normal...but not really drinking water. I figured because the scratch is wet and the corn is fresh she may not need as much.

Also, I have another girl who is smaller than the rest, and she has some VERY watery poo. She eats and drinks normally, but wow on the poop! Any recommendations? We do live in the desert, and it is getting hot out.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any expert advice. These are our first chicks, and we have a steep learning curve.

I wouldn't give antibiotics for the broken leg as long if she is eating well and looks good otherwise. How long has the other hen been having runny droppings? High moisture foods will cause this. If this problem has existed for a long period consider separating her from the others and giving this one the antibiotics. She may have an intestinal infection.

Thank you for the advice. My hen with the broken leg is still eating and acting fairly normal, so I'll hold off on the antibiotics.
