Please help....these open sores began a few weeks ago, i sprayed with blu-coat and isolated the infected hen. She seemed to get better, but then two others showed the same wound. The purple color is from the blu-coat I sprayed on it (feed guy's recommendation). The original hen is listless and Im very worried about her. I thought it might be scaly leg mites, but the open wound didn't fit the pictures I saw on line. Very worried about my girls....

I would try some daily soaks with warm epsom salts to the legs for a couple of days. Then use some castor oil and rub it thoroughly into the dried skin on the legs once a week. I am not sure it it is scaly leg mites, but it looks somewhat like that. They could be pecking their own or each other's legs, but also consider that rats can bite legs.

Thank you so much for your reply I so appreciate it. I will try the daily soaks and the castor oil. I found a retired vet who works one day a week, I am taking two of my hens in on Thursday to see what he thinks.
When we built our coop we used 1/4 inch wire on all sides, top and bottom included. We even dug down 12 inches around the perimeter and ran the 1/4 inch wire. We live out in the country and I didn't want any pesky critters getting t my girls. I would be surprised if rats could get in. But, you never know!
I'll keep you posted with what the vet says. Thanks again.

Did you ever find out what was the cause of the sores? Did you get a photo?
One of my girls has two blister like sores. I've not seen it on any others....

Do you have ants in your coop area that could have bitten her?

Well their entire coop/pen is free range.
Their shelter is just a roofed area in the trees with perches. It's not entirely, enclosed and just the ground as the floor so any sort of ant or insect can get in. It's literally a free range pen and they've got about 5000 sq ft of penned area. Not to mention they spend the afternoon with the door open so they can go out of that...so definitely exposure to ants. Could they do that?
But come to think of it there's centipedes, scorpions, even tarantulas....all sorts of jungle critters.
