This has been mine and my fiances go-to website for info since our first flock of chickens that arrived late January. About time I join, right? We currently have 18 pullets, 1 rooster. 4 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks, 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 3 Ameraucanas, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Australorps. Bruce Wayne is our rooster and he is a huge Australorp.

We originally had another Barred Rock hen but she was killed in a dog attack about a month ago. I cried so hard! I felt like a 3 year old. Sadly, it was my lab Leo that had gotten a hold of her and shock her up like a stuffed animal. We buried her in a marked grave and swore never to let the chickens and the dogs be together unsupervised. Maybe a month or so after that, we were sitting on the porch on our lunch break watching the girls graze. I heard birds cry, and in a blink of an eye a hawk and flew down and pinned one of our Ameraucanas! At least 3 blue jays were flying at the hawk. We took off into the yard and the hawk flew away. I didn't see a chicken in sight. Lucille my wyandotte came out and made some shaky clucks after I called the girls to come out for treats. The other chickens heard her and regrouped. They were shook up! They ran from brush to porch to more brush until the all settle under heavy trees. I counted and everyone was there. Thats when we decided to get a rooster.

Bruce has been our newest addition. He seems to be fitting in just fine. Aside from the occasional peck on the head, sometimes not letting go, he is very sweet to the girls. He always lets the girls get treats first and he makes sure to let them know when he has found something good to eat. He is also very vigilant. He has such a strong cluck, it gets their attention. LOL

I love the girls so much!! When I drive up they run to me, wings flapping, and happily cluck! Its so much fun having chickens. :D

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm so sorry to read your dog killed your barred rock :hugs Being vigilant with dogs is crucial if they are not used to them. That was a very lucky escape for your girls with the hawk attack. Hawks can be a real pest, sounds like Bruce is setting in well though with his duties.

I hope you don't have any more attacks. Maybe a covered run would be the way to go if you do and just do free ranging when you can supervise.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh I am so sorry about the loss of your BR.

I know how hard it is to lose them, especially when they get killed. Dogs can be brutal. Even tiny ones. I hope your heavy heart heals soon.

Enjoy the rest of your flock! They sure are fun to keep.

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome you to our flock!

@ Yorkshire coop, I learned a hard lesson about dogs and those pesky instincts that kick in. LOL I was so angry with him! But I knew it was my fault and he is just a dog and they do things like that. I forgave him that evening. We do have a covered run which the girls spent weeks locked up in there but as they got bigger I decided to free range them. They can not get enough of it! We have had a lot of rain and the girls got there first taste of crawdads (mudbugs) whatever you want to call them. lol

I learnt a hard lesson too with one of my dogs. Both dogs are fine with the chickens no probs at all but I hatched and raised some quail. Once they went out into their little run and house I made for them one of the dogs became very interested in them. I turned my back for literally 2 minutes and she has pulled one through the wire killed it and started to death roll it in the lawn. From then on she was nightmare with them and in the end I had to rehome the quail.

They sure do love free ranging don't they!!

Oh No!! Poor little quail! :'( I don't know why I thought all farms could be like the movie Charlotte's Web. Rude awakening... And yes they love it! If they see us outside and they are still locked up the huddle at the door and stare at us... LOL

A rooster can be a good warning system but, when he engages a hawk and gets killed, he won't be of use to anyone. He wouldn't stand a chance against, fox, raccoon, coyotes etc. Chickens can learn to accept a large, safe run with covered top - just like they can learn not to sleep in trees but inside the coop on a roost. They won't cut you out of the will, if you keep them in a covered, safe run.
