Hello!

I have 15 baby chicks, between 1 week to 2 weeks old that I purchased from a reputable hatchery. I've had them less than a week, and at least one of the chicks has extremely runny poo. I know this is a major symptom of Coccidiosis, and I don't know what to do.

My books all tell me to take a poo sample to the vet for testing, however I do not have a vet who handles chickens. I am continuing my search for a suitable vet, but until I can actually find someone - What do I do???????

I'd really like these girls to survive. They are fairly active and don't seem to be listless.

Thanks in advance!

If you're fairly certain it's coccidiosis, you can start them on Corid. You'll find dosing info on the thread titled "Corid dosing". I used 5 days of treatment at a dose of 1/2 teaspoon liquid Corid per quart of water, and provided a fresh batch of medicated water daily. I lost 2 chicks prior to beginning the Corid treatment, but none after.

Welcome to BYC, and best of luck with your chicks!

I am on the second treatment for coccidiosis.I treated mine at 10 days old.At first I did not see blood.just runny poo.and I had one that stood and doze a lot.Than I found blood.I moved them out in a coop and run three weeks ago.Yesterday I found bloody poo. again.this morning I seen runny bloody poo.I Had mixed a herbal tonic with water that was suppose to fight the coccidiosis.Sorry to say it did not work for me.I have started treatment with corid.I had wanted to go with a natural treatment. As I have read testimonials that it would work.I will not take any chances on losing my little flock.

I'm not certain of anything at this point! :)

Thanks for your suggestion and I will read up on Corid.

Thanks again!

I found it slightly frightening when I realized they weren't top shape. Thanks for the advice- I'll avoid "natural" and look into Corrid.

Good luck to you as well!

If you are feeding them Medicated Starter Feed, then it can give them diarrhea. If that's the case, I would switch them to regular Starter Feed, and don't use medicated feed or Corid unless they've been outside and show other symptoms. If they came from a major hatchery then they've never been outside and shouldn't have ever been exposed to cocci, which is in the soil.

Coccidia is everywhere, including all chicken's digestive systems. A little stress comes along and you have a full blown epidemic. If they were my chicks, I would treat them with Corid ASAP. Treatment will not hurt them if it is not coccidia.

Mix them a fresh batch every day for 5-7 days. Make the treated water their only source of water. No vitamins until treament is done.

They aren't born with it in their digestive tract though, it gets there from the dirt. If they are eating medicated feed, then they are already on (a small dose of) Corid. So all I'm saying is to make sure that Corid isn't the cause of their diarrhea...before treating their diarrhea with Corid.
