Hi all.

I am fairly new to this and I need some help. My chickens are housed in a coop with dirt flooring and I use sawdust to cover it. Its great for scratching and for them to eat bugs but a week ago we got some heavy rains and the coop was soaked. Now the coop is full of maggots! They have been eatting them but they seem so much and I'm worried that the maggots are so much and they may harm the hens.

I don't think ingesting them will cause harm, but they can cause other issues and headaches. Personally I would clean out the coop and put down fresh bedding. You don't want a full on infestation.

Won't hurt the chickens unless they have wounds or poopy butts that the maggots get into.

Clean the coop and fix whatever allowed the coop to get soaked.....a wet coop is bad for many reasons.

Chickens get headaches? Just kidding.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am still working on getting the coop in order so when it rains again it won't get soaked especially since the hurricane season has started. Sad to say though that one of the girls did have a poopy butt and the maggots got in. I spent the morning at the vet with her because I was not sure on how to treat it and I didn't want to take any chances. Everyone found it funny that I was at the Vet with a chicken some of them had never seen that before! But I want to do my best for her to recovery

Glad you caught it and were able to get the help you needed.....maggots will literally eat a chicken alive.
