Green Tomato Varieties-- wHY should I grow them? Which do you recommend??

I planted those seeds and moved the transplants into the gardens. The wooden sticks with names eventually rotted away, which makes determining GWR very difficult. Near the end of the very poor growing season ( drought and no way to water well) I realized the one plant that i was waiting and waiting and waiting to ripen was a GWR!!!!!! A cherry , that was delicious!

Found Green Envy in a Burpee display. Still hoping to get Green Grape.

Did some sleuthing, and discovered that the green shouldered varieties while very different than the perfect red or pink globes of the commercial types, are actually good for you. And the plant's leaves are not as poisonous as we have been led to believe. Found an article published in a cooking magazine ( on line) and have been sampling the leaves all winter ( plants started in November) .

Through online sites like Pinetree in Maine and the Sample Seed Shop , there are MANY heirlooom GWRs and non-commerical variety GWRs to trial!!

Green envy hybrid. Long, very large grape with nipple. two bites.
Grew in clusters. Not sure when ready to eat so had to taste test. First bites--yuk. Not bitter just HORRIBLE taste. The fruit did change from the usually green tomato dark green to a paler green. Nope, not ready. Flower end lightened toward yellow, then up the fruit toward stem. WOw what great taste. Both my son and I loved these. It was like russian roulette, testing our skills to pick the perfect green envy. If too yellowy ( still a light green-yellow) the flavor was mushy and horrible.

I wll not grow again but will continue to get others to try a couple at a time.Still need a better labeling system. THis year the lables on plastic faded, grrr The shape of the GE was easy to locate and know it was GE.

I grew the Green Zebra awhile back, I think 2 summers ago, and just didn't like the fruity, citrus-like taste. Nothing wrong with the fruit other than my dislike of it's taste. It grew beautifully and made nice fruits but I just prefer the strong robust flavor of the black/purple varieties. Glad other people are giving different colored tomatoes a try!
