I planted those seeds and moved the transplants into the gardens. The wooden sticks with names eventually rotted away, which makes determining GWR very difficult. Near the end of the very poor growing season ( drought and no way to water well) I realized the one plant that i was waiting and waiting and waiting to ripen was a GWR!!!!!! A cherry , that was delicious!
Found Green Envy in a Burpee display. Still hoping to get Green Grape.
Did some sleuthing, and discovered that the green shouldered varieties while very different than the perfect red or pink globes of the commercial types, are actually good for you. And the plant's leaves are not as poisonous as we have been led to believe. Found an article published in a cooking magazine ( on line) and have been sampling the leaves all winter ( plants started in November) .
Through online sites like Pinetree in Maine and the Sample Seed Shop , there are MANY heirlooom GWRs and non-commerical variety GWRs to trial!!
