Soft shell eggs

Thanks for the forum info. I have 7 hens, all 5 months old. I have 3 that are laying consistently, but this morning I found 2 very small VERY soft (like tiny under-inflated balloons) on the coop floor. The yolks were intact. No idea who is delivering? So, what up folks. As an aside, after the usual "first" eggs, I did get one with THREE YOLKS!
Sadly, it flew out of my hands and decorated the side of the coop!

It could be that they just started laying. Provide some extra calcium just incase, but sounds like it might be either one started laying or the 3 that are laying might have laid one. On mine, I narrowed the cause down to the heat, 100+ weather causes a lot of stress/watery poo. I actually had one the other day when it was really hot, but I know which one it is and why. If you notice any of your chickens do a penguin walk, its probably her. Mine was walking like a penguin then popped out a soft shell egg. Other than that she's a really good layer.

So, 4 soft eggs later (2 eaten off the coop floor) laid before I went to the coop at 5AM! As if it (they) just fell out of her! None today, phew! Very hot here (post: How hot is too hot...) but got another semi-soft egg at noon. We'll see if the added oyster shell works! Thanks all for the great posts.
 
I had a similar issue. My girls cracked or ripped the softed shelled or thin shelled eggs that were layed too and ate them. I don't have an egg eating problem - thank the Lord. I offer free choice oyster shells all the time. They didn't eat them. I fed them bad their own eggs with egg shells and Oyster shells mixed. Still didn't help. I went to Walmart and bought calcium and vitamin D bills. I grind them up once a week and add that to an egg. The soft shell eggs are gone. Hope this helps.
 
When it's hot outside they tend to have watery poop. They drink and drink and drink well then they poop and pop and poop. They will loose a punch of nutrients like calcium through the their watery poops. When it's hot I actually provide little fans, watermelon, oyster shells, put frozen water bottles in their water, and if it's a really hot day I will put them in a kiddie pool to help cool them off. I almost lost one to the heat last year and took me months to rehab her. I have learned my lesson. :)
 
Hi there! I know you posted quite a long time ago but I'm having a soft egg problem with one of my six layers. Just curious about the vitamin D you gave. Was it a solid tablet (not gel) that you were able to crush? Also, after crushing the Calcium and the D did you feed it straight up or mixed with their feed? And last question, did you feed it to all of you birds? Thanks for your help! I'm so sad my bird isn't doing well
