It's time to upgrade the duck area for Rachel and Phoebe (Blue Swedish, over 2 years old now)! Our current duck coop and run is about 6' x 12' and is located within our 5-foot chain-link backyard. The space is shared with our dogs when they go outside (2 Danes, 3 Beagles, and whatever foster dog we have at the time). It's great to have the fenced-in area for the ducks, but we have to have the dogs inside to let the ducks out and then we need to have the ducks in their run to let the dogs out. Luckily, we have only had one "oops" of forgetting to put the ducks away before letting the dogs out (nobody was harmed).
Here is the current living area when it was being built a couple years ago.
Coop (now with vents, but this was the day it was finished - surprise that my husband built me)
Working on the new area. It's well shaded and is 40' x 40' in size. We will line the inside of the fence with smaller fencing, but using the panels for structure.
Here is the beginning of the new duck "coop" construction. It's 8' x 16' and will have an open area (think of an open garage, but no door) that will have the pond inside (to keep tree leaves out of it), food and water, as well as just general bad-weather. It will also have a typical "shed" enclosed area that will house their duck coop, supplies, and be a safe location to "lock them in" at night.
We changed up some of the foundation under the framing. We were having a tough time leveling at first. All good now.
I'm so excited to see more progress as the weather cooperates and when we have time on the weekends! I'll be sure to update as there are new things to share.
