Well.....yes, dogs will be dogs, but laws are laws, too and they're necessary to keep the peace.  It's unfortunate that the dog pays with its life when it ultimately comes down to human responsibility.

From my point of view, a violent dog that will attack animals may one day stretch to attacking children, so I'd rather it was handled before it came to that.

Hi..i am not trying to argue with you..but....just because a dog attacks another animal does not mean it will ever attack a human...unless there has been aggression shown from these dogs to a human in the past..they are probably just being dogs...if one of my dogs got out in the yard when the birds were out.....well, i'd have some dead birds....will my dogs attack me?...highly unlikely...(you can NEVER say never though..),  because my dogs respect humans, but ....they would love to chase and kill any small flighty, squawking thing running around...its just their nature...

Dog will start with chickens, small live stock, And then a small child.

Killer dogs have no place anywhere.  Yes chickens are raised for food,  dog have been and still are raised for food.

So what makes a dog a better pet than a chicken.

When I first got my chickens one got out and my dog killed it while "playing" with it.  He has since learned to be gentle (by using the command "easy") with the chickens and won't do any more than lick one occasionally.  They are now his "babies" and he protects them.  Just because he killed one once doesn't mean he'll do it again or that he can't be trained not to, or that he should be labeled a killer.  On the other hand, he goes hunting with us and is trained to retrieve dove.  Still, he now understands the difference between chickens in our yard and doves that he's suppose to fetch.

ETA:  As far as people and children are concerned, he is the biggest baby in the world.  Kids can play with him, sit on him, pull his ears and tail, and he just wags that tail and tries to lick them all over!

Dogs will never intentionally kill a human being, kids included. It is literally in their blood to be loyal. The ones you've seen on news, radio etc about "pit bull" or whatever killing young children, well read up on how they raised the dog 95% of the time the owner encouraged the dog to show aggression some without even knowing it . They are hard to train dogs, and owners are lazy to train them. Its always the owners fault, end of story hmm All dogs need to be trained, no dogs are born trained. Dogs can learn to be nice when trained properly. You dont even need to be a certified trainer. there is plenty of information online to "train a dog" I mean you can even learn training a dog by watching "Dog Whisperer" who knows a great deal about dog psychology.  Dogs also cannot be compared to a chicken. A dog is a dog, a chicken is a chicken, they both have values and pros and cons. Dogs are breed to be loyal, volunteering at a anti animal cruelty club at our college, we find people that are cruel to their dogs that breaks our hearts. There was a man who repeatedly stab his dog for pleasure then bandage him up again. Every time the dog sees his owner he wags his tail...and licks his face, when we tried to take the dog away it cried and whimpered looking back at the owner while we were driving away. It wouldnt eat for days, we had to force feed him and put it on an IV so it wont get dehydrated... I can never forget this, thats why I will always defend dogs. I have never seen a evil dog in my life, I saw a fair share of dogs that misbehave, untrained, and scared. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just perhaps educating those who dont know 100% about dogs.

I saw a dog go after a 2yr child, lucky we were there. When for the neck.

Yes I know how dogs can be train.

Ask parents that loss a child to dog attacks, and chow  breed are as bad as pit bulls.

I know there are many great dogs, have had many myself.

There are also evil dogs.

my aunt lost her first daughter to a dog... it attacked her because he was not trained, and she grabbed and pulled its tail. It bit down...wouldnt let go I killed that dog to save her daughter and unfortuantly I couldnt. Still I say, it didnt do it intentionally... but she provoked it. Its irresponsible to leave a child with a dog or be near a dog that are not trained well enough. Or to get a breed that is hard to train, such as chow and pit bull.

my aunt still have that dog who is now well trained and obediant..wont even hurt a fly

Thats horrible Nyis, I'm sorry for your aunt's loss. I too lost someone close to a dog. Yes I believe there are evil dogs out there too, but because they are mentally ill and need medical attention. Dogs that kill were raised incorrectly, like children they need to be taught. I have 8 chows, 3 pits, 4 labs, 2 jack russle terriers, all rehabilitated dogs, and again I have yet to meet a dog that cannot be rehabilitated, but thats just me. I hope people can get dog breeds that are sutiable for family. Some dogs are more aggressive then others, doesnt make them evil though just need more time to train them.  deerman, I hope the 2 year old was okay though and wasnt seriously injured. I would give that dog away... and have some proper training.

Edit:

dogs are breed to serve humans, they will do so each have different mentality built in them. Retrivers will...lol retrieve. Pits are good guard dogs, Boarder collies make great herders and watch over animals, They almost do it natrually but still need to be trained for them to get better though.

deerman..i'm sorry, but that is just simply not true..just because a dog kills a chicken does not mean it WILL definatley attack a child..that just dosent make any sense...i mean it COULD happen..(i dont know anything about these specific dogs)....but, how many peoples dogs have killed a small rodent..or something?...that does NOT turn it into a baby killer.....i'm sorry..it just does not...i will say it again....i have a Great Dane that was raised around 6 children..they could do ANYTHING with him...he was a horse, he was a pillow..and he loved it, he loved them!....... but when he sees my chickens..he kinda acts like if he could get them he would want chase them(they look like fun to him...a game..) and if he got to chasing them..i can just bet a few would get hurt/killed..would he bite/eat one?..i really dont know (and hope to never find out)..i do know that he would trample them..(he's a big clutz!)....but it IS IN their instinct to chase smaller animals....children are not chickens....the dogs do know this...even if the chickens are OUR children..big_smile...

Agree just killing a chicken doesnt mean they will attack a child. But think about ones killing sheep, calfs. a small child could be next.

The problem in my neighborhood is that some federal agency enabled unqualified people to buy homes.   Illegal immigrants would be here from Mexico and within a couple of months, they would be buying a house.   No credit history; no social security number; no driver's license; no job.  But they got a smoking deal on a house.

Now, about every third house in the area is  in repossession.

People are leaving the dogs behind.  They can't rent apartments with a couple of pit bulls.  So now we have packs of abandoned dogs roaming the neighborhood.

Last month, a park maintenance worker was attacked in the park.  The dogs just about killed him.  They were eating him.

Animal control here is just about usless.  They won't do anything unless someone is attacked.  Then it is too late.

Taking garbage to the alley is risking your life now.  For the time being, we are carrying bear spray.  I don't see a good end for this problem.

I trained my dogs to be nice to chickens BEFORE I got chickens..well Dont have chicken yet but soon will *mumbles at the marans egg* and.... I had 18 dogs to go through lol.. But I'm being a responsible owner, and pack leader. I have a 3 year old...And I made sure each and every "aggressive gened dogs" is well trained. They protect my little girl from everything they think is dangerous. Including a balloon and a fake snake..which got ripped into pieces. lol

rufus: I thought animal control is to remove unwanted animals especially dogs. You can file a claim with your city about that. Those dogs 'especially from mexico' are prob breed to be illegal fighting dogs. THEY should have removed them already when a man almost got..eaten.... You need to team up with your neighbors and sign a petition, and take it as high as possible until they do something hmm good luck

I'm a dog lover myself, friend, but you're deluding yourself to the point where you could become part of the problem.
