Hello
My older chicken has always had a piece of skin that curled backward on back toe. It is hard and has never given her any problems. I have noticed that it is getting too close to her leg . Can I file it down/off do you think? will it hurt her if I do...please advise?

Thank you Karengoslin

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X2 If you have a picture for us to see, it would help us figure out what might be going on. :)

Ahh yes I do think its a spur. Do lady chickens have spurs? If so, then yes its coming from back, curling over towards her log and is far too close to her back part of leg in my opinion. It is thick and hard. It hasn't broken any skin

Yes, hens can grow spurs. Generally it is the older hens that this happens too. All chickens, rooster and hen alike have the gene to grow spurs. But in hens this gene is turned off. But as the hen ages, sometimes this gene can get corrupt and cause her to grow spurs.

If you do indeed think she has a spur that is growing improperly, you might take a look at this thread on removing a spur....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/37548/removing-trimming-rooster-spurs

See if you can get someone to help you upload a pic so we can all see if this is a spur or not. :)

Good luck!
