Crowing
That is also another common thing that happens with new layers. Sometimes, the need to lay an egg sneaks up on them and it just kind of drops out with them even realizing it. I had both of my Easter Eggers do that this morning. A beautiful green egg, broken and crushed from getting stepped on and a blue one was covered in poo. They will eventually figure things out and start using the nests regularly. In the mean time, you could put some extra bedding under the roosts where you found the eggs. That should help cushion them when they drop.
