I ordered some chicks from Welp Hatchery in Bancroft Iowa for the first and time. The first group started dying the day after delivery and a week later the second batch arrived. They all died with in two hours of getting home. Neither bunch acted healthy and Welp refused to refund or replace them. There were no emails or calls to remind me of shipment and their customer service sucks. I will never buy from them again.

Sorry to hear about what happened.

And thanks for the warning.

I hope you have better hatchery experiences in the future.

Well I'll go in the opposite direction, We are very pleased with Welp Hatchery.

there was a mix up in shipping dates, and received the birds 2 days after ordering instead of the 2 weeks I had requested. Due to the fact we were gone and had unreliable help attempt to pick up the birds and set up a brooder, lost every bird before the end of the day. ONE phone call and it was taken care of, An Email confirmation of the replacements was awaiting by the time we got home Monday, and today I received the replacements on schedule, 1 extra of each ordered, all but 2 appear in perfect health, the other 2 seem to be improving.

I guess all hatcheries have their good days and bad days. We've lost chicks that were shipped to us as well, but I still buy from the hatchery (McMurray) because they supply good chickens.

Have you ever ordered from any other hatcheries?

Have you ever ordered from any other hatcheries?
No we haven't, have gotten others local from TSC and 2 different feed stores.
On a side note, of the 32 chickens sent, lost 3 in the 1st couple days, 2 CX , but all the others are doing well at 8 weeks old today...biggest CX is 6lbs 4oz....Named her "Smoked"

Good hatcheries should provide every chick healthily. What a shame.

Are you replying to me?????
Ordered 30, received 32....3 died in short time and they offered to replace or refund for the 3......2 of which were extras to begin with...
This was after them replacing the whole 1st order due to a shipping mistake...not the birds health....
They will be getting my next order

I was replying to pigandchisel, but it could apply to you. If there were shipping errors, i would consider finding a hatchery closer to where you live.

I purchased chicks from Welp earlier in the year. On arrival one had gotten pinned under the separator in the box and was dying. 2 more died within 24 ours. Welp reimbursed me for all 3. So that part was great. However, now that they are all growing up, I'm discovering that my order of all girls, is about 1/3 boys. Considering I purchased 35 chicks, of 7 different breeds, that's a lot of unexpected roosters. And it wasn't just 1 breed that's hard to sex, I have roosters in 5 of the breeds. It might have been all 7, but I've had predator issues and I only have 1-2 birds left in a couple of the breeds, so I don't know if the ones that were killed were male or female.

I've contacted them and am still waiting to hear back what their warranty is regarding genders.
