Hello Everyone. A new city program allowed 15 households to have 4 chickens on a trial basis. I filled out an application and 6 months later we have a coop and are raising chickens for the first time. We are about 4 weeks away from getting our first egg.
I had a lot of questions and this site was the first place I looked. Thank you

. I see you are using hardware cloth. I am so proud !!

I used to show Cockers in Elgin at the Hemmens Bldg. in the 70's.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a beautiful flock and your coop looks great as well. X2 on drumstick diva; using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire will keep you from losing your flock to predators.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on being part of the city program...hope that goes well so other residents can have birds too.

Nice to have you join us!

The hardware cloth paid for it's self already. Four nights after they moved in something tried to get in. It dug around the coop six inches in spots. I'm glad I buried the cloth a foot down and a foot out. Another BYC tip most likely.

I hope all is going well with the chickens! My husband and I live in Chicago and are starting to look for homes in chicken friendly suburbs. Any rumors on when Elgin will open up to more people having hens?

hello, I know that only 11 out of the 15 households took out permits. I talked to the city contact and he said the program was going well and they will probably expand the number of permits allowed. Maybe another 25. But, that was not definite. The city should be making a decision soon . If you go to the city of Elgins website they do have regulations posted. If you want a contact name and number. Email me and i'll send it to you.He would have the most up to date info.
I believe Geneva also allows chickens. I'm not sure of any other cities in the area.
Happy house hunting.
