I'm a Newby at this chicken raising. Originally I purchased 3 chick's, 1 duck oh, and a bunny and then my son gave me 2 more chick's " top hats" so cute. My little brood turned into 4 hens and a beautiful top hat rooster. I've learned quickly that I needed to punc him out and let him know that I'm top rooster. He's tried to fight me but he now knows he won't win. I would like to raise more but I don't know what I will do if I get to have more roosters. I don't know how to process them for consumption. Can anyone teach me how to do so.

Welcome to BYC!

We love talking about our birds, so feel free to ask any questions.

There are awesome links and threads on how to butcher chickens, and they make wonderful, healthy meat! We don't really breed our chickens for meat, we just butcher the extra ones. If you want regular meat then some great heritage meat bird breeds include the Orpington, Dorking, Barred Rock, New Hampshire, Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte, and others. You can buy mixed batches of heritage meat roosters at hatcheries for a good price.

The ideas and opinions vary, but no matter what you want to make sure that the birds aren't too stressed when it happens. My Mom tapes the wings of the birds so they stay still and don't flap around and panic, and then breaks their necks. We find this much quicker than the bleed-out method, which has to be painful and frightening, despite what people say.

Our birds are all wonderful, they love treats, and they are curious and pretty. Your lucky to have just one rooster, we ended up with 10 when we started.

Best of luck!
