i plan to get ducks in the spring and i'm so excited, i'm already planning! i'm teetering between abacot ranger ducks and welsh harlequin ducks. if you have (or have had) abacot rangers or welsh harlequins, i would love to hear your thoughts about these ducks.

knowing that all ducks are individuals, i want to choose a breed that:

  • is known for pretty awesome foraging ability, as i won't be able to give them a lot of commercial feed. however, i'll be able to give them lots of fresh vegetables, grains, fresh seaweed (rinsed), and fresh clams (if they like clams?!). they'll also have full access to a lush foraging area. anyway, foraging ability is important.
  • is (hopefully) able to lay some eggs without much/any commercial feed. if they're known to lay eggs year-round without artificial light, that's a massive bonus.
  • isn't a breed known for being really high-strung or nervous. i think harlequins are known to be generally calm and sweet, but i don't know about rangers.

so any recommendations one way or the other? or do you recommend a different breed altogether? thank you! i'm sure i'll adore whatever ducks i get once i get them, but the research is fun. XD thanks for reading!

btw, i don't have the internet at home, so if you reply to me and it takes me a week to respond, that's because i only get an hour or two online per week. it's annoying, but sort of relaxing at the same time.

).

From what I've heard, Anconas lay 210-280 eggs a year, are easy to care for, hardy and excellent foragers, as well as good at pest control and good for meat. They are critically endangered and in need of help to get their breed numbers up.

Khaki cambells are excellent foragers and lay 250-340 eggs a year. They are bred for eggs and are hardy and active.

Magpies are great foragers, lay 220-290 eggs a year, and are also hardy. They are considered one of the best foragers among ducks. They are critically endangered also.

The Welsh harlequin lays 240-330 eggs a year, is docile but active, is hardy in hot and cold weather, and is excellent at foraging as well as good for meat. They are critically endangered as well.

Abacot Rangers lay up to 200 eggs a year and are used for both meat and eggs. They are tame and friendly.

I hope this helps with your choice. They are all beautiful animals and a great deal of fun to own!

Best of luck!
