Hubby and I bought 17 acres for a small homestead. Nothing was on it we started from scratch. We live in a very wet area. As a child I helped with the chickens on the farm they would come and sit in my lap to be petted. The bantam rooster would protect my back from the 2 game roosters we had they were very mean. I have been off the farm for many years. I have been raising rabbits for some time but chickens were added last year. My daughter bought too many production reds so I got 3. They lay well but were not what I had in mind. This year I ordered 12 RIR pullets and 4 silver lace wyandottes. I wanted to reproduce my own chicks so 2 months later I got my RIR rooster chick. I did not want to raise him alone so I picked up 2 gold lace wyandottes but before I found them I had gotten some cheap chicks from TSC, 4 black bantams. I thought I was getting small chicks like my new rooster but they turned out to be bantams that where older, they had most of their feathers. Knowing that he would be bigger than them I put him in there anyway. I noticed one bantam took to him right off and that she was different than the others she was booted. I looked her up she is a black Birchen Cochin pullet. I am in love with her. My RIR rooster took to her too and they are buddies now.
