My dozen coturnix are 4 weeks old now, fully feathered and all seem alert and happy. They are my very first quails and I dare say it's going we'll *knock on wood*
I turned off the red lamp for a few hours today, to gradually start to take it away. I have read that quails need artificial lighting (but not heat lighting) for healthy egg production. I was wondering if the ceiling light being on all the time will be adequate lighting or if I need to get another lamp to put over the cage.
Eggs should be coming in the next few weeks and I'm still figuring out who are the males and who are the females. My plan is to seperate them into more cages so I can have a male and 2 hens as my breeders, a cage of just hens for edible eggs and probably sell any other males I have. If the eggs come before I split them up I won't know which eggs are fertilized and I'll have to assume they all are.
Are fertilized eggs safe to eat?
