I have been interested in chickens for 10 years but just started my collection about two years ago. I've read a lot of books and magazines in preparation, but find myself more intrigued and amused by them all the time.

Welcome to Backyard chickens - people even love to pull up a chair and just watch them. We call it "chicken tv," they are fascinating and also very therapeutic.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you could join us!

Chickens are awesome, they're so curious and silly and friendly.
People call parrots great pets and chickens just production birds, but chickens can't bite your finger off, can free-range without flying away, don't cost $5,000 and don't scream in your ear.

We use our chickens for meat, eggs, and pets and they are a ton of fun.

Feel free to ask questions, post pictures and comments, and just tell fun stories about your chooks.

Best of luck!

I love watching them. I can't the amount of times I look out the window in a day to see what they are doing. :)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

I had a RiR that would come when I called her....."pumpkin". She frequently came to the back door and I let her in for oats/her favorite. She was injured by fox then picked off by hawk. Loved that chicken.

I have buff and lav orp, barred ply rock, australorp, few easter eggers, welsummer, mixed leghorn/white rock. Have one lav orp roo. I just hatched my first set of peeps....well my leghorn did rather. She hijacked the nest from australorp.

You have a nice mix of breeds. Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs.

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Those are some great breeds. I have buff orps too. They are my favorite breed. Lavender orps are gorgeous! I've always wanted one or two.

I remember doing tons of research about raising chickens too. I filled an entire notebook of all my notes. Now, even though I have chickens, I still find myself researching them more and more. I can't wait for the day when I write books about chickens for others who are researching them.

My lav orp is the sweetest, but my favorite is RIR. She was so smart, sweet and social.
