In the Brooder

My chick had to be helped out of it's shell after a day and a half of being stuck in the membrane. When it finally came out, the umbilical cord was still attached and full of blood. I tried to leave it, but each time the chick moved, it was tearing it's belly from the weight of the shell and lost a little bit of blood.

I cut the cord where it was attached to the shell and had less blood in it, and put pressure on it until it clotted.
Once I moved it to the brooder, she fluffed right up and took a long nap. The cord and belly dried up and looks to be healing nicely.

Now it's been almost 24 hrs and she still walks like she's drunk, flopping all over and kind of sits back on her butt instead of fully standing up. When she turns her head around, she falls backwards. She chirps, is alert. and attempts to walk all around but bounces all over the place. The other chick that hatched 2 days prior is way more active and walks and jumps all over. (but also had to be helped out of membrane)

She also hasn't eaten anything yet, but I know they don't always eat for the first day or so.

Right after hatching, she pooped out yellow liquid, which stuck to her and I had to clean it off this morning.

I almost feel like she hatched prematurely because of temp spike in the incubator of 102 a few times.

Also, this was from a clutch of eggs that my broody hen was stealing, so it's a staggered hatch and she abandoned them after hatching 5. I had to take over not really knowing what I was doing. This is my first hatch!

I guess I just need some moral support, and advice on what to do about it not standing. Do I wait it out, or try to make some kind of splint? The legs are straight forward, not out to the sides at all. If i put one finger under her, she can stand up but as soon as I take my finger away, she falls right down.

I'll go take a picture and post that.

Sorry I can't help much. I just wanted to say that I had a silkie hatch tonight the same way! It was the last of 10 to hatch and the shell was stuck on the poor baby. I finally peeled most of it off. A bit is firmly glued onto it! Cord is still dangling. I can't help but good luck! I'll be following!!

This morning I went to check on the baby and it's now able to stand up and take a few steps but still a bit wobbly. I think it's going to just need some extra time to build strength. (Maybe it's belly is sore? Who knows?)

It's energetic and seems healthy. I still haven't seen it eat or drink but I don't watch it 24/7 so I can't be sure. How is yours doing, Kattitude?
