Think I've caught the bug......

I think, just maybe, I might have become slightly addicted. I had my first ever lot of incubator chicks hatch out almost a week ago and they're doing brilliantly. Alas, we only had a 30% hatch rate but actually, in hindsight, that was a good thing because we've decided to get more Polish bantams and Barbu d'anvers from a different breeder so we can create our own breeding flocks.

So...with that in mind....I picked up these six white Polish bantam eggs this morning, and another six d'anver eggs should arrive tomorrow ready to go into the bator on Sunday (leaving some time for them to set). I've definitely caught the bug! Will spend this weekend making plans for the new coop!! :D

It's so exciting, isn't it? I'm on my 4th hatch, today is day 20, have 2 pips & just ordered eggs for my next hatch to arrive next week!

How exciting!!!

I did a quail hatch but to be honest, they hatched so quickly there was nothing to see. Chickens are MUCH more interesting!

How many eggs and what type of chickens are you hatching?

i had a dozen going into lockdown, 9 barnevelders, which were shipped eggs and 3 of my own olive eggers. I just ordered Black Copper Marans and BBS OE's for next week!

I am contemplating doing my 1st hatch with my boys. We have 2 hens now and aren't allowed roosters in our town. Wondering if anyone else has been in this situation or what anyone would suggest I do if I hatch roosters??

That's the one downside of hatching.....you probably will get roosters. I'm going to try and keep mine; I'll shut them in at night to dull the noise and I might try using cock collars too. I know some people are against them and say it can kill birds if not properly fitted, but if it's a choice of killing my roosters and attempting to keep them with a collar, it's the latter I'm going to try! Sometimes you can rehome cockerels too, but I've had difficulty as most urban hen keepers are in the same boat regarding the noise issues.
