I live in Simi Valley, California, & I am having difficulty in finding a vet that is familiar with poultry & who will vaccinate my chicks for Mareks. Does anyone know of any vets in Ventura County area or Los Angeles area that vaccinates chickens for Mareks? Thank you.

Well, good luck, & I mean that sincerely. I live in Bakersfield, & asked my equine vet if he knew any vets who would treat chickens. He responded with, "No, and they get a lot of diseases, don't they?" Well, poop, not what I wanted to hear! I've learned to give shots to horses, sheep, calves & pigs. I guess chickens will be next!

Most people either buy vaccinated chicks, or vaccinate their own day- olds at home, with vaccine bought on-line (Jeffers). It comes on 1000 dose packages, and can be reconstituted in quarters, because it's only good for one hour after reconstitution. There are veterinarians interested in poultry (like me) and also avian vets who have been treating parrots and indoor pet birds. Check with your state vet ***'n, or the state vet school; there probably is someone. Maybe your local vet will be interested in helping you too. Mary

Thank you for the tips! What size syringe/needle should I use? I was told 1cc & tuburculin syringes are good, but I don't know what gauge of needle to use. I'm going to order the vaccination & syringes right away!
