Bamagirl's Coop a doodle doo!

Well, here is our coop a doodle doo. We received our baby chicks two weeks ago. This is our first ever chick endeavor. Our coop and pen are now completed. We drew a picture of what we wanted it to look like before we began. I was inspired by pics I had seen in a Country Gardens mag. several years ago. So we had no plans just in DH's noggin. The size of the coop is 6' x6 '. the pen is 16' W x26' L.We put the new babies out a couple of nights ago. They seem to be quite content spending their nights locked up tight in their coop a doodle doo and spending a few sunny hours a day outside running and playing in their pen.

I did a little research to see what other people were doing and saw that some of you liked the linoleum floor because it was easy to clean. We happened to have some in our shed just lying around. Hope I will also like it! We covered it with pine shavings when finished. We used roofing tin for the top. It only took three pieces. floor

We purchased the siding. It was one of the few things we had to buy. My husband is in construction and most of our building materials were recovered from jobsite trash piles. What's one man's trash is another man's (or woman's) treasure! We arranged the nest boxes so they can be accessed without having to enter the coop.The door will fold down in case Mr. Snake is sitting in there to greet me , I can keep the door between me and him!

Well, we decided to paint it barn red and trim in white. After we finished it my DH said he didn't like it because it was painted in The Crimson Tide's colors. I AM SURE MY CHICKS ARE LOVING THIS! Although truthfully, I never even thought about it. But Roll Tide anyway!

We enclosed our old garden spot for the chicken yard. We just added bamboo poles to the t posts that were already there. The top of the pen is covered in chicken wire also. The wire around the coop is temporary until we get comfortable with our dog being so close to the little ones.

All is completed. The doors were made from heart pine flooring-perfect for us although they were trash to someone!

A little bit about me..........

I am bamagirl68. I live in central Alabama with my husband of 5 years. We were (jr.)high school sweethearts in 81,82and 83-reconnected again 7 years ago! I have a 16 yo S, 20 yo SD, 18 yo SS and a 10 yo SS. Only two are left at home now. I am a mail carrier(supposed to be part time but work 40 plus alot!) I am also a floral designer. I love living in the country! I still live in the small town of New Site where I was born and raised. I lived in Ky for a couple of years(beautiful place- wonderful people!) but there is no place like home! My dad has raised chickens for the last several years and it put a bug in me. I just love everything chicken! (say it like Paula Deen ,now) Well, my DH finally got tired of hearing about it and decided to build me a coop! So here I am! Now referred to by many as the funky chicken lady!! But I find it soooo peaceful just to sit and watch them. It is truly a blessing to live the country life! Hope to make a lot of new friends here. I have already received such wonderful advice from all parts of the country. Chicken people ARE SPECIAL!
