Our coop design is based on the Wichita Cabin Coop - with slight variations to overall dimensions. Dimensions of the enclosed, covered run are 13'-4" x 5'-4" and the hen-house measures 5'-4" square.
We're located in Albuquerque, New Mexico (zone 7b) .
The coop will be sufficient for 10 hens but for now we have 8 pullets (each a different breed).
The metal roof is used to harvest rainwater and store it in a 55 gal. barrel.
Both the feeder and waterer are made from recycled 5 gal. buckets.
Right now for the 8 laying pullets, we have 2 nesting boxes that are both used - a 3rd box is being used for storage .

We chose to paint the frame of the coop white to match our fencing. And then picked some complementary colors for the hen-house, the pop-up door and the nesting boxes.

In the foreground is our DIY waterer - 3 nipples are under the bucket. In the background you can see the feeder; again a DIY job that has 3 sewer elbows that provide access to their feed.

Here's the white, pristine ramp - it changed color pretty quickly ! You can also see the sand we chose to go with in the run. We mix sweet pdz and DE in it on a regular basis.

The hen-house has 2 roosts that are placed above a poop-board which is filled with sweet pdz - it takes 60 seconds to scoop up the droppings daily.

We placed large flagstone slabs around the perimeter for predator protection. Two large windows provide lots of ventilation for the hot, dry summers we have in the Southwest.

A little branding logo for our urban homestead - 7 Heavenly Hens GARDEN.

Then hen-house has tile linoleum for easy cleaning and wood chips as bedding material on top of that. Although there are 3 nesting boxes, we currently only use 2 - the 3rd is used for storage of garden tools and dried worms ;)

The rain barrel on the left is used for rain harvesting from the metal roof of the coop. There are 2 compost bins in the left/foreground which get daily contributions of droppings from the chickens.

The orientation of the coop and it's roof provides maximum shade in the summer for their run.

Here are some of our girls. We have 8 different breeds in our 1st flock; Australorp, Barred Plymouth Rock, Cuckoo Maran, Easter Egger, Rhode Island Red, Golden Buff, Sicilian Buttercup and a Silver Laced Wyandotte.

Our coop is the main attraction of our GARDEN. We are also beekeepers with a Warre bee hive and grow vegetables, herbs and have a variety of fruit trees too.
