Excellent article!

I like the construction details, copious photos, and the evolution of the design as you tweaked it to suit your needs.
Amazing that someone can build such a marvelous coop!
Lovely process paper on the evolution of a desert coop. Thank you for taking the time to help us learn from you!

This is just what us fellow Arizonans need! the design explanations and photos are great!
I'm impressed with the adaptability.
Great work, you have given me some ideas, i already have a ramp from the roost to the nest boxes but now i'm going to add another from the nest boxes to the floor, much easier on my large girls i think.
Poop ledge under roosts, i have been thinking of doing that but still unsure. Do you find the girls scratch around in it ?
Your girls look very happy :D
Every detail from cold/hot weather modifications to creature comforts for those gals who call it home!

Thank you so much for your kind review!
Love your coop, IM! Our climates are so much different and I'm not sure which one would be harder to deal with. You're coop looks like the perfect setup for yours!

Thank you Meg!

When it's summer here sometimes I think snow might not be so bad.
Using this as a reference for my new coop, thanks!
How many birds do you have? Does the mister make a mudhole?
I'm in Louisiana, drainage is an issue...

Thank you! I'm so glad you've been inspired. I've kept up to 12 birds in this coop.

The mister doesn't create a mudhole, I have it pointed straight out in front of a fan. The air is cooled but not wet. My conditions are extremely dry. Honestly though, my chickens seem to prefer loose soil that is damp not wet for dustbaths and mud puddles for wading. The fan and mister are a sort of swamp cooler for the coop once temps are above 110*
I love this. So cool

Lots of room. Lots of air and enough pictures.
My only concern is, is it secure from digging ground predators.

Thanks for your review!

We don't have digging predators. Birds of prey and neighborhood cats are our concern here. If we did there would be a perimeter of hwc but we didn't feel it was necessary.
Wow! This is a wonderful set-up! It's designed to handle both extremes of weather - desert heat to winter nights. With a few minor adaptations, it could be made to handle snow, as well. The entire set-up is well-documented, as well, with great pictures of the original build and the year-in adjustments. VERY nicely done, both the coop/run and the article. Thank you!

Thank you, and thanks for checking it out!
Great coop for a hot climate, lots of ventilation and room for the flock! I also like that your article included mention of things you've modified since it was first built.
