I'm Back On The Farm... again I grew up on a farm and moved away when I went to college. 15 years of marriage and two kids later, we moved back on to the farm. Growing up we never had chickens and ducks - only lots of cows, cats, and dogs. My kids asked if they could have duck and I've always wanted chickens. So here I am - 8 baby chicks in the basement under a heat lamp, waiting on a coop, planning a chicken run, and trying to figure out with the family what type of ducks to get....
I did it. I brought two ducks home yesterday. I added to the family 2 White Pekin ducks. They are so cute. Only a few days old, but they are the same size as my chicks. I put them in the same brooder and they all seem to be getting along fine. At first, the chicks were interested in who they were and I think the ducks thought they were getting ganged up on - a few pecks here and there for a few minutes and then everything was fine. The ducks will be pets. My boys have always wanted...
We've had the chicks almost a week now, so I decided to take a few pictures to see how they have grown. Over the weekend I noticed that they are stretching their wings and trying to fly. I added a wire top to the brooder so that they don't accidently jump or 'fly' out of the brooder. It took a few days to get them to trust me, but now they eat plain yogurt off my finger and boy do they love it. They circle around and all take turns getting a taste of the yogurt.
