Once upon a time, in a very small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a banty hen made a nest in a neighbor's yard. Little did the neighbors know that their lives were going to be changed forever... Growing up in the suburbs of D.C., I never considered that I would someday have chickens. Cats? Absolutely. Dogs? Of course. Box turtles, goldfish, gerbils, siberian hamsters, guinea pigs, parakeets, betta fish? Sure. Chickens? Hmmm.... Last summer we moved into a 1920s...
Week Four...and boy, are they a handful!!! Einar, my big cockerel boy - his comb's coming in...and take a look at his GORGEOUS wings! (I am a pround mamma!!!) The girls seem to be saying, "Mom, it's getting a little crowded in here!" (That's Sam in the front on the right - he's my runty roo!)
One week old - they are growing so fast!!! Temporary Living Quarters Baby Sam (Named after Sam the Eagle from the Muppet Show!) Some of the Girls How totally cute are these babies?????
My babies at two weeks...they're growing up so fast!!! I have eleven Norwegian Jaerhons from Ideal Poultry... Sam, my favorite cockerel is in the front. He's named after Sam the Eagle from the Muppet Show. See the resemblance? The other cockerel, Einar, is just above him in the picture. The rest are pullets and I haven't named them yet...have to get into my Norwegian ancestry books!
Week Five - And a New Bit of Scenery! The babies were complaining about their cramped quarters, and (of course) we I don't have the coop built yet, so I searched for another alternative. Turns out that my darling man has a 1980s Dodge Ram in the backyard with a cap. He gave me the go-ahead - it's on the list to be rehomed - so I got to work on some modifications. The cap has a few pinholes in the roof where the rain comes in, so it's now covered with an ugly blue tarp. Hey -...
Christmas came early this year!!! On August 25th, I found my first eggs!!!! They are small - I thought NJs were supposed to lay large white eggs? Doesn't matter...maybe they'll get bigger as the girls get older. I am so EGGCITED!!!
