Humane Euthanasia: When, Why, and How Introduction As all chicken owners know, there will always be a time when you have to make the ultimate decision to end your chicken's life. Much like any other animal, chickens can and, most likely will, become ill. This is when you have three choices: Try to heal the sick or injured chicken,...

I have had many, many people tell me that Ameraucanas, Araucanas, and Easter Eggers are all the same breed with different names. I'm here to tell you that they are, in fact, NOT the same breeds. So, let's start off with the Ameraucana: The Ameraucana The Ameraucana is a breed of chicken thought to have been developed in the U.S.A, but it's not exactly clear where they were developed. The name Ameraucana is a blend of American and Araucana. The breed comes in bantam and standard size, and...

Coccidiosis And How To Treat It What Is Coccidiosis Coccidiosis is a disease that poultry can get from a certain parasite, called a Coccidia. They are ingested through the mouth, where they thrive and reproduce in the intestinal tract, interfering with food digestion and nutrient absorption, and causing blood loss and dehydration. The coccidia lay eggs called oocysts in the intestinal tract, and when the chicken poops, it sends those oocysts with the poop. The chickens that eat around...
Isabelle: I got Isabelle as a straight run chick from Atwood's. She was a healthy chick when I got her, but then she got majorly sick. She was almost dead when she "pulled up" and started eating and drinking. I continued taking care of her, and, despite silkies growing slow, she grew up quickly! She grew from a tiny, sickly chick, to a large, full-fledged hen in no time at all. However, she took forever to come into lay! She was almost 11 months old when she finally started to...
Let's face it: Schleich has some awesome horses. They make some of the best model horses ever. It's incredibly fun to set them up on real sets. But... they are missing one thing: halters! Now, you can get one halter in a $6.00 package of horse tack. But, when you have some thirty horses, you really want more that just one halter. I have made it easy to get halters! I custom-make my own Schleich horse halters. Below are some examples of my work. None are currently for sale, but will be, most...
This is an article dedicated to the life of one amazing little rooster! Rocky was an Old English Game Bantam rooster. He was 6 months old in the pictures, and quite a beautiful boy! He was the leader of the flock. He was a good leader, though. On September 25th, 2012, he was found dead after a dog got loose and killed some chickens. He is still missed greatly. This is the memorial to him. This is Rocky. He was so photogenic! He was such a poser! Stink-eye king! Posing for the camera....
Greenfire Farms has me jealous! They have all my fav. breeds and are tormenting me. I think I will probably order my OEGB's Jan. 16 when Ideal Poultry has that .85 cent sale that they say they're having. Mom is gonna kill me when I say I want more chickens, though. I know that we have a future of new chickens. 25 out of 50 chickens got killed this year due to our lack of knowledge of how to care for them. Oh well. G2G. Bye! 2013! It's here! No, I'm not doing a New Years Resolution, I'm...
Hello, and welcome to 101 Reasons You're Happy To Have BYC! I started this project as a thread, but when I was no longer able to edit the front page to add reasons, I decided to restart it. I am now putting the project in an article form so that I (and you, too!) can always edit it! The rules are quit simple. Just edit the article and add 2-3, 4 at the most, reasons why you are happy to have BYC. I have numbered them for you. The opportunity to make new friends is very big, and there...
So, you've taken the plunge into the wild world of chicken keeping? Congrats! Now you need the chickens, but you are wondering what breed to get. Yes, there are over 200 different breeds of chickens, and it's very, very tempting to just go to the feed store in the spring and randomly select your peeps. But, choosing the right breed takes a little more work. When choosing your breed, think logically: do you want to breed your chickens for extra income? Do you have a taste for very rare...
(This story is 100% true!) On the night of November seventeenth, when we locked up the coop, the last thing I expected to see was an unusual double of my pretty blue Ameracauna, Fancy Feet. I thought I was just seeing a different chicken. But, no... Meet Nomad, an extraordinary chicken with a long and twisted tale to tell. Nomad's life began at a small house in Garnet, where a lady bred and raised Ameracaunas for an additional income. We found an advertisement about her...

Boots: I got Boots at an Atwoods' feed store. She was the only Cochin that wasn't afraid of me. I loved her a lot, and held her all the time. The result is a wonderful young hen whom loves to cuddle. Boots on the right, Splash on the left Boots is gentle and tame. Her favorite treat is cherry tomatoes. She will leap up onto my lap or shoulder for these, and I am not kidding! :D Boots once laid her egg in my shoes, which I had left near the chicken coop when I put on my rubber boots to...
December 15th, 2012: I decided to have a blog here on BYC, because it sounded like fun thing to try. So, here goes... I have finally found a place where I can get some showgirls and show-quality silkies. Cackle Hatchery does, occasionally, hatch out a few showgirls with their silkies. I am hoping to get a few showgirls when I order some silkies from them this next year. I have entered in the BYC Article Writing Contest. Let's hope I win something. I spent an hour in the chicken coop,...
