The lowly CX gets no respect, until you put a 13 pound dressed bird fresh from the oven on the table! We have all heard the names they are called “frankenbirds” or “mutants”. The common story line goes something like “ they are lazy, stinky, smelly' sit in there own poop.” The myths are they are too lazy to walk, their legs are so bad they can't stand, and of course they will die at 8 weeks of age. Well, I am working to dispel those nasty rumors. They do not need to be processed that...
Basic turkey questions and answers.
I have just had to to the worst job of bird rearing. I was forced to cull a 4 day old turkey. We tried everything, it's feet and legs would not work. It happens to us all at some point. Our choices are not good, either let it die a slow miserable death or find some way to speed up the process. We have found what we think is a good way to preserve some dignity and comfort for the chick in a humane fashion. I will be treating this subject with a little humor, some of you will say very...
I know this may seem like an unlikely place to find marital advice, but I figure this is actually the perfect place for it. As many of us know, our feathered friends can introduce extreme strife into even the most stable of marriages. If there is a potentially negative outcome of bird ownership, I suggest you deny any knowledge, and continue to deny to the bitter end. If you cannot deny, practice switching the topic. Neither of the above work 100% of the time, you then have to make the...
The Lowly Christmas Tree I just came in from cutting our Christmas tree. My Wife and I picked it out a month ago. We went out and looked at the trees and decided on the one for us. We marked it by hanging a Veterans Poppy in the branches. There was not a lot of fanfare with it. We only have the two of us here so the decision was easy. However, the emotions the act of cutting a tree had on me were profound. My wife and I bought the farm I grew up on a few years ago from my Siblings. I...
I have written an “instruction” sheet I hand out with chicks people buy from me. The actual “sheet” is written in this article in Italics. The rest is here to explain why I made that instruction and to give you a bit of my background and why I wrote what I did. Yes, the instructions fit on one page, the article does not. I enjoy hatching chicks. I am not the greatest wisest chick hatcher in the world. ( yeah I know spell check does not like hatcher, I do.) I grew up on a farm, I have...
This little guy is a photo bomber. He/she is 2 days old and extremely curious. I believe heshe is one of my EE Partridge chanticleer crosses.
Maggots those disgusting little larvae that leaves us feeling sick and our birds smacking their little chicken lips in delight. They are not a problem if they stay where they belong. Once the they infect our birds they are big trouble. Commonly called “flystrike” can affect any open sore or cut in just a few hours. Even a vent can become the target of the flystrike. I recently had and attack of the killer larva on my special rooster. I was afraid I was going to lose him. By mastering my...
I have struggled with trying to clean a foam incubator. I thought getting the bottom clean and new looking was impossible. Between hatching debris and hard iron water. I thought they were destined to look terrible forever. This is going to be a real short hint on how to clean them. It does not take hours of scrubbing and believe me I have tried that. All that happens is I get frustrated and the Styrofoam gets a hacked up look. A couple weeks ago I was trying to clean the incubator....
How to write a winning BYC Chicken article! As a past winner who is still awaiting the grand prize all expense paid trip to Australia including first class air fare, I think I can give you some hints. BTW, there is a misunderstanding on the prize, for some reason BYC does not think they offered me the all expense paid trip to Australia (for four, I might add). Lets start with some simple rules: Never use acronyms not everyone will understand them. Example BTW, while must of us know...
