Light Sussex are one of the breeds I'm working with. I'm starting with 2 lines of these. One line came from Bill Braden - Landoftobe in OK. I'm not sure where he originally got his. I ended up with some really nice birds from this hatch. Good sized birds, good type, fairly strong black and clean legged. They matured very early. They hatched on 5/14/09 and I got my first egg from them on 9/30/09! Just under 20 weeks! The other line is from Paul Bradshaw's Australian imports. These...
Greetings! Welcome to my BYC Page! (Finally) I like to say I am a city girl with a country heart. Grew up in Mpls, MN til I was 18, moved out and never looked back. Ended up on a 5 acre farmstead outside of Georgetown, MN with a pop of 124. Quite the change! I've been here since 1985 and wouldn't change a thing!! I've had chickens on and off for 20 some years now. Mostly just good layers. RIR, BR, Leghorns. During summer 2008 some critter started picking off my hens. I suspect fox...
I just love my BLRW's! I've got breeders from Jerry & Rebecca Foley and Jesse Paul of Paul's Poultry. They are an extremely sweet breed! And beautiful! Great layers of nice large light brown eggs and they handle our harsh Minnesota winters quite well. One thing I'm learning is they have a strong tendency to go broody on you! They are the favorite of my breeds to hatch out because they are just like a box of chocolates: You never know what you are going to get! Here's my main man...
OK So we need a bigger Brooder! Thanks to all you good people on the BYC site here's what I came up with: It is 3'x4' and 3' high 1' off the ground which as it turned out is perfect height for me to sit in my chair and watch them! Both top panels are hinged and can be latched together because on cleaning day to get them all out I was going from side to side to catch them all! The end panel slips out and the bottom tray slides out for easy cleaning!! The tray was my splurge cuz the only...
The 2008 Rendition of.... Why did the Chicken Cross the Road? (warning... political humor abounds) BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE! JOHN MCCAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road. HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience...
OK it was a 32'x24' garage that was attached to a house in a buyout program in the flood plain. House was demolished and thegarage was in real good shape and my SO said he wanted to move it to my place and I said You wanna WHAT!? There was one wall missing where it was attached to the house. Brace it up really well to keep it somewhat square. You cant see the inside bracing in the corners we put up but like I said they were short 2x8s and 2x10s screwed into the wall studs at an angle and...
