The Birdello - a dog house sized mini coop that I'm using to house my 15 chicks from 2-3 weeks until about 8 weeks, when they'll be in the big house. After that, this will be recommissioned and used for storage in the big house by removing the roof and handles. I think this would work well for 2-3 hens if a little nest box was put inside, something as simple as a short box or plastic tub on one end. All together, this cost me $39 to build, mind you that doesn't count lumber as I already had...
"Peep Show" Brooder 03/10 - This is the brooder link to where I found this simple design using a Rubbermaid plastic tub. I'm going to brood 15 chicks in here this spring, and this should last them for at least 2 weeks. I will take pics of mine when my little chickchicks come home! Coop Phases...1,2,3... We are planning on 15 chicks this April, but don't have the coop built yet (that will happen from mid-April until about June 1). I want a variety of good laying hens, and aren't planning on roosters, but we'll see if any of the pullets I get turn out to be roos! Chicks picked up at the store on April 2 and April 3, 2010: 5 Australorps, 5 Golden Sex Link, 5 White Leghorn, 2 Ameraucaunas. The local feedstore had a deal with 5 free for 25 lb starter food, I got 5 sex...
I have dreams! At first I wanted just about 7 hens, enough to provide us with PLENTY of eggs as I love to cook, but then I doubled that number to have enough eggs for my college bound son who is cooking for himself, and extras for friends. I then perused this website, all the coop pages, other sites, many books, and decided on this design, which, while it is not spectacularly beautiful, it is functional, and matches the other building shapes on the property. This coop will be 10x14, with a...
2010 - year 1 of my chicken foray... Eggs hatched approx. March 30, 2010 (purchased on my 44th birthday, 04/02 and 04/03) Plan was to have enough hens to lay 1 dozen eggs a day, so after research, I figured 15 pullets should do. I ended up with 17. ; ) 5 White Leghorns: plentiful, white egg layer...free with purchase of 25 lb bag of chick start n grow from Coastal. 5 Golden Sex Links: plentiful, brown egg layer...free with purchase of 25 lb bag of chick start n grow from Coastal. 5 Black...
