My 1st Incubation To see the whole making of...start at "my bator" page... So in order to get my temps to stabilize I moved my thermostat and added a heat sink, per the wonderful insight of the BYCers! With the metal back of the thermostat on the wire above the heat source it responds much quicker to changes. Now it went from 95-102 to 98-100...NICE! The baggie wiggler says 98-99. So in went the duck eggs on the 18th... I made a sheet to keep track of everything during this incubation...PM...
Raising & Housing Ducks Ducks are pigs! Anyone who has raised or kept ducks knows this. Yet we still keep them! Obviously they are worth it! Here are a few things I have figured out in the years I have kept them... Brooding 1st week- Standard Chick Waterer with Paper Towels over a layer of pine shavings. 2nd week- Start with the milk jug waterer and remove paper towels from shavings. Float a nice green piece of lettuce on the water surface to get them interested. Make sure the hole is...
My "Bator" (obviously huge thanks to MissPrissy and 77horses and all other BYCers who have helped explain how to make this!) I bought a cooler ($7), a bottle lamp kit ($6), picture frame ($3) and the Humidity/Thermometer ($8) at Walmart. Then I went to Home Depot for the hardware cloth ($10), hot water heater thermostat ($8), 1/2" pvc and fittings ($4). I went to Smith's grocery to get a plastic egg carton ($3), with eggs of course! I had on hand a fan light bulb 25W ($2),...
TheNewMrsEvans Page! Hello! I have raised poultry for pets and show for about 15 years. I have kept bantams and standards, as well as ducks. I hatch every spring and can also send fertile eggs of any of the breeds I raise. All of them are works in progress, each year I strive to better the breeds... Anyone else in Monterey county??? The Completed "Bator" My really awesome Walmart cooler! Arg! It works though... From this angle you can see the handle of the turner, which I labeled left and right so we can record how many times we turn each day. Underneath it is the tube for filling the water tray, and some small vent holes. I removed the glass from the frame, cut a hole about 1" smaller than it and glued it down to the top. I made a wire platform and light bulb enclosure, then put aluminum foil behind and in front...
Chicken Housing This is our main coop... The shed was already on our property, full of junk...so I cleaned it out and converted it into a coop! -I got some old linoleum and covered the wooden floor to prevent it from getting damaged by moisture and make it easier to clean. -I took out about 3" of siding at the eves to allow ventilation without predators getting through. -I made two pop doors about 4" off of the floor with latches that secure on the inside. -I bought a 12'x12' chainlink dog...
My Hatcher I basically made another incubator with larger floor space and no turner! [FONT=tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Two big spaghetti sauce jars for heat sinks...non skid stuff so they don't have to walk on wire... It's working!
