I am new to keeping chickens and have already fallen victim to "chicken math". I started with the plan of buying 10 Pearl White Leghorns and 5 Red Stars from a woman in a nearby town. Got those girls, and they laid 6 eggs on the way home!!! Then got 7 more before the day was out....I was told that they rarely took a day off and boy was that true. Since April 1st they have laid 127 eggs all total. Back to the chicken math....So I got impatient, I was supposed to pick up the hens on March 22, but when I went to the store to get final supplies for the hens, there happened to be lots and lots of chicks at the store. I came home with 5 "aruacanas", now I know they are more EE's than aruacanas, but that's okay. So on the 18th the family grew by 5 little ones, then the 22nd I picked up the 15 hens. Great I thought, I have prolific layers of white and brown eggs, and in late summer will have some green to blue eggs...wonderful this chicken thing is going to be fun! Well, I work at an elementary school and the kindergarten teachers agreed to incubate roughly 30 eggs for another teacher's son's chicken project. They were so cute I picked out 4 more chickens and brought them home too. One of which I was sure was a little roo, well she wasn't but her "sister" was....I have learned that the one I thought was a little roo turns out to be a barred rock. I am pretty sure the others are ameracuana mixes. When I can I will post pictures of them and maybe if someone sees a specific breed in one of my chicks you could let me know.
Now that the weather is warm, the babies spend their days in a large wire dog kennel inside the big girls coop to get accustomed to the adults and the weather. They are so funny, they already give themselves dust bathes, and jump onto the little roosts I have in their kennel. When I put them out for the day, they run into their kennel chirping and scratching happily. Here is a pic of the babies in the kennel, not a great picture but I'll post more later.
