BLACK COPPER MARANS
Our Marans trace back five generations to the Grisham line of birds. At Critter Creek Farm (National Poultry Improvement Plan number 786) we specialize in only dark Marans egg layers. One hundred percent of our breeding stock have feathered shanks (legs).
Our hens have really been laying great. Over the years we have selected not only for dark eggs but also selected for egg production. These hens never skipped laying even through this winter's ice storms.
Marans eggs do become lighter during the hens laying period. With 9 being the highest our eggs are currently ranging from 5 to 7 on the Marans egg color scale. These are the same hens with the same genetics. We do ship only our darkest eggs.
We have about 60 BCM hens and only ship eggs laid on Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the week's eggs go into our incubators. My wife is an Agriculture teacher at our local high school. Her FFA students are selling the chicks as a fundraiser to complete their new livestock barn.
All of our chickens are pampered as we feed them laying pellets, oats, cracked corn, fruit, home grown vegetables and oyster shells from time to time. They were raised all natural without any antibiotics. We have a 1:6 ratio of roosters to hens in order to ensure the highest fertility rate.
The Marans was developed in France in the mid 1800's in the town for which they are named. They made their way to England in the early 1900's, and quickly became Very Popular for their Very Dark Brown CHOCOLATE color eggs. Black Copper Marans make for an exceptional eating gourmet egg and are highly prized by chiefs around the world.
This is a trait they are still know for today. These beautiful birds were first exhibited in 1929 in Paris by the Poultry Breeders Society of France. Since then they have made themselves popular in various countries around the world.
