Chickenpooplady's Random chicken stuff

In the fall of 2011, my uncle moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio and decided to start a farm. The first thing that he did was buy 68 chicks from Mount Healthy Hatchery. However, he did not have the land for the chickens so I raised them for him in my garage and then garden. They provided an amazing amount of compost and our garden has never been better. Five months later the pullets were ready to go out to the farm. As a thank you for raising the flock my uncle let me keep my four favorite girls. We picked out two barred rocks and two buff orpingtons.



Here are my girls. From left to right, Buttercup, Mrs. Chicken, Oreo, and Cami.

I also just hatched one chick and bought two. Their names are King, Phil, and Lily. I could only keep one rooster so Phil just recently went to a new home.

Oreo is a 1 year old Barred Plymouth Rock hen.
Unlike the other three she does not mind being by herself, but is definitely the leader of the flock. She is always the first to find something good to eat. When she does, she lets the others know about it.

Oreo is also a great layer. She is the only one of my hens who still lays in the winter.




Mrs. Chicken is a 1 year old Barred Rock hen. She is really funny to watch. She is the biggest of the four hens and she eats the most. She goes crazy when I bring them scraps. She will even leave the nest box to eat them. Because she is so big she does not run with the others when they are free ranging. Instead she waddles after them. It makes us laugh every time.



Cami is a 1 year old Buff Orpington hen. She is very small for her breed but she lays well. She was the first one to start laying last spring. She is very fast but once caught she is extremely calm and will lay on her back in your lap.






Buttercup is a 1 year old Buff Orpington. She hates being by herself more then any of the other hens. Once she was accidentally locked in the coop all by herself while the others were free ranging. She began panicking and screaming very loudly.





King is my newly hatched Silver Campine chick. A few weeks ago I received 16 hatching eggs in the mail from Wisher1000. Despite Wisher's wonderful packaging, shipping was really hard on the eggs and King was the only chick to hatch.

I was really excited when he started chirping and wiggling in the egg. And then a pip!



He continued to wiggling and chirp after he pipped and then the next morning he began zipping!




And he is out!





Once King was all dry and I knew that the other eggs were not going to hatch, I moved him to the brooder.



He liked to cuddle and play with his friend mirror.







He still chirped a lot and seemed lonely so we went and picked up two Barred Rock chicks from a local farm. The Barred Rocks were a few days older then him and twice his size so I thought that they were going to pick on him. However, when I put them in the brooder with him, he started attacking them. King continually pecked their combs and eyes. I guess he was just showing them who was in charge and that it was his brooder because later that night he calmed down and now they get along great!

Miss Kay is a Barred Rock. Miss Kay is a Barred Rock.She is a very curious and is always first to find food. She is King's best friend and is always by his side.

When it was time for Miss Kay to lay her first egg, we were still in the process of building their new coop. They normally stayed in the brooder in the garage but one day we had them out free-ranging in the yard. Miss Kay came back into the garage and found an open bag of pine shavings. After she was done laying she started to sing and jumped of the bag of shavings, leaving her first egg.





She has already proved that she is a great layer. For her first week of laying she laid 7 eggs in 8 days.

I just got 5 new chicks from Meyer Hatchery!




Lotus is a Speckled Sussex. She is one of 5 chicks I recently got from Meyer Hatchery.









Violet is a Black Australorp. She is very energetic and does not stay still very long.








Iris is a Blue Andalusian. She is the smallest of the chicks but is still very fast and hard to catch.







Rose is an Easter Egger. She will climb all over you if you are sitting on the ground and chase after you if you leave her.







Her eggs are a olive green with blown spots. The brown egg on the bottom is from Miss Kay.


Poppy is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. She is very cute and fluffy. She eats a lot and will randomly fall asleep standing up with her head hanging down.










We added these two hens to our flock when the rest of their flock of laying hens were killed by dogs on a local farm. They were welcomed right into our flock!
