What a great job you did with this! I have been debating this exact coop.... I found another version of it at www.InformationCupboard.com . I would love it if you would break down some of the materials you utilized. In the other versions the coop has been trimmed out with 2x4's, your looks like 1x3's on the box is that correct? I also really like the tongue and groove idea, great way to seal the box. Have you also lined the interior of the box? The big question..... For my own budgeting purpose... Ball park, what did you end up spending on the entire build. Great job, hope to hear the details. This will be a really big project for my skill level, so I am trying to get all my details correct.d
Thank you for all your compliments! RichterPA - Since I didn’t keep track on specific of how many items that I purchased such as a figure number for 2x4, etc. I will assemble the list of things that I purchased to the best I can and will post it to the above page in couple of days. Once of your question “Have you also lined the interior of the box?”, that I am unclear of what you meant, can you clarify more on this?
RichterPA - I added an update on the bottom of above page that are including the materials I utilized as you request. Hope this will help! Do keep me post on how your progress when you done with your chicken coop building project.
As for building cost (Pozees & + others who might be interested in building costs), PM me, and I will send you the total. Since I didn’t have any free / recycled materials, everything was purchased new from the ground up. All the items that I purchased, I tended to opt for materials that were durable, higher quality, and/or would be esthetically pleasing to the eye, and this certainly tended to be expensive. I like the final result, though, and plan to use for many years to come, so no big regrets on the costs so far.
Someone might find that I spend way too much for the chicken coop, and may make a remark about why not just purchase the egg from supermarket instead. This is including some of my friends and relatives. Thus, I prefer not list the total cost here. It mays spoil the moment. If you are really like to known the total costs, please, PM me.
I often said, it is not just about harvesting organic eggs, but also raise them as a pet. So far, I really enjoy observing their behavior when they are out roaming freely on each afternoon. Each of them, have different personality and behavior.

Sir.... I wanted to personally thank you for making the effort to type up that list! What a huge help that is. You asked for clarity on of my questions. I inquired if you lined the box with a different material. I know you skined the coop with 1x6, but the interior finish is not 1x6. Did you do that for a funtional reason or just to make it visually pleasing?
RichterPA - Ok, now I know what you meant. The answer is NO. The Tongue & Groove pattern board it came with two different pattern on both side. You can choose to display whatever that fix you taste for on the outside. The pattern on the inside of the coop is about 3" space instead of 6" space pattern. Here is the Tongue & Groove Knotty Whitewood Pattern Board that I purchased from home depot: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...=tongue+and+groove&storeId=10051#.UBq1W1ElySo
OK.... that makes since, I couldn't figure out why you would line the interior with another layer of high end finish. I plan on lining my coop with commercial fiberglass board, you see it in industrial bathroom settings. I want to be able to easily take a preasure washer to the interior a couple times a year.
Thanks again.
Just wanted to let you know, I completely understand your situation. We received our 2 day old chicks the end of May, and are in the same boat. My husband has been working day and night on the coop since the end of May. It is so detailed, so much trim..... We are just about to put the main door on and a few other small touches, and the chicks can finally leave their 7' box. Your coop is beautiful. You did a wonderful job.
I too researched on this site and used the same coop as a starting point. Great Job.
Awesome job- planning our WC version for here in Albuquerque in the spring of 2014 - will be back to look over your build-documentation in the future - again, great job ! Thanks for sharing.
