My DH designed this system from similar systems on this site. Thank you BC of all the idea's. I live in South Dakota and was tired of filling buckets and breaking ice. Our system is inside but the building is not insulated, yet. It has been -40 and still kept working this winter. So I wanted to recommend this to anyone else looking for a winter option.
Need a 55 gallon drum.
A pond pump that does atleast 1300 gallons an hour
a livestock tank heater.
pvc pipe and joints
Chicken nipples (from qvc supply)
spigot

there is also a spigot for flushing or for filling a bucket. the tubing on the side of the barrel allows me to check the fill of the barrel .

we added a gutter under this later on to catch stray drips

The system is also routed through my brooder for my little ones.
