Hello everyone I am Sharon Young Bishop. And I live in Atlanta Ga--(Jonesboro-clayton county with my husband 3 dogs, a Shih Tzu and 2 yorkies and my 24 yr old adopted handicap son. We built our coop in 7 days.
The must haves:
1. Must be a playhouse kind of vanity armoire cabinet design- able to house 6-10 chickens
2. Must have good ventilation
3. Must have poop trays under the roost
4. Must be close to the door so I don't have to walk in the rain or snow to get eggs
We built it while hubby was on vacation. We use to spend our vacation on a cruse like this
But now that i am obsessed with having chickens in the backyard we are spending our vacation like this...
Oh yea--I have a daughter and 2 grand children who live in London with her husband. I have a son in Texas with his family and my oldest son likes to drift around from city to city. But we are a very happy family,. Hubby and i decided to raise a few chickens in the back yard after reading the Clayton county code book, which states that we could have up to 25 birds including roosters as long as they don't disturb the neighbors. So we opted for females only. I like to research everything before we do it So I found this wonderful site called https://www.backyardchickens.com/ and i have been spending my days, hours on end there. Reading and learning everything i could about raising chickens in my backyard.
Then i looked at all the wonderful home made coops and we decided it would be best to try and build our own,. Even though we had never ever built anything in our lives- hubby and i set out on this great adventure to build i own coop. We decided... well i decided that the coop should be as close to the house as possible so i wouldn't have to walk a long way to get eggs in the rain and such. i also wanted to have a raised garden bed near by. So we decided to put the coop right next to the back-door deck. Now mind you this area is only 7x4 and putting the coop there will block out the kitchen window. But hey i don't like doing dishes anyways so who needs a kitchen window. The plan was... well we didn't actually have a plan,. i just knew i had a 7x4 footprint and I wanted a playhouse kind of Vanity armoire cabinet design.
I looked at a thousand pictures of other people who built there own and thought...hey we can do this .. piece of cake right? NOT! This is the hardest thing i have ever done and mind you hubby did most of the work. But still i carried heavy lumber and measured the design and helped set up the foundation and cut windows and painted the coop and... well you get the picture. This was hard work, i got cut a lot. I am a dainty lady and i thought i could do this and yes i did, but next time I don't know. LOL- This is probably my first and last build. But i was determined to "get her done!" So after soooo many mistakes, sore body baths, change in plans, over budget spending, and cover ups. The Red Roof Pen is finally done! And just in time to receive our 6 little chicks-Edith-Eva-Irene_Thelma-Elmerine and Artavia. Here are a few picture taken along the way.
So we started out without a plan or a clue, just my idea and the pictures of other designs i had read about.
I wanted to make sure the chickens were safe so we used a lot of hardware cloth. I wanted poop trays so we made those too. I wanted lots of ventilation so we have vents on 3 sides and windows that open with screens on the front and sides. We wanted them to be warm in winter so we added foam board insulation to the ceiling, floor and 2 walls on either side.
day1 we mapped out a foundation and began the building.
day 2 we started working on the frame work. Don't ask me how I don't know!
nestbox and window roughed in
Day3 Hubby put the roof on and I went crazy with the paint.
Day4 Oh we forgot we need a floor right?
Right here the front is being held together with gorilla tape.
I did find that there were 2 things i could not do without while
building and that was gorilla tape and gorilla glue. lol
Oh and you can't see it but the top of the roof is Red!
Day5 starting to look like it might just work!
If you look closely on this one you will see one of my yorkies
and my shih tzu in the upstairs window. lol Because i use to spend
most of my time in doors with them, i am sure they think
I am quite mad right about now!
And below you will see
that i fell in love with a power tool. lol love that jigsaw!
day6 Putting on the hardware and trim and more paint and screens and such!
we made the screen door and the window screens with 1x4 and hardware cloth
I simply love these pull out screens! what a great idea! I got it
from someone- and so many on here- thank you again!
Day 7- add more paint and more trim and more hardware. But basically we are done!
I will add lights and some colorful art trim soon but for now we need rest!
I love the little storage area underneath! and we put vinyl on the floor for easy cleaning.

I painted the inside of the nest box black aND CUT the little entry holes.
I made the screens for the front doors and they can be removed when the doors are closed.
We are going to add pavers all around the bottom and we also have to build the
attached run which will be big enough for happy chickens!
Okay this is what we did in one week about 8 hours per day. will add
more pictures when we build the run and the chickens are inside.

My son and his family came home for a visit and loved the new coop!
They couldn't believe we had built it. lol Below=my son Edward Antonio, his beter half Stacy and my grand-daughter Janyia

well we got 9 chicks and I want 6 more so looks like we will be building our second coop very soon. lol
but anyways meet...Eva,Edith,Thelma,Louise, Irene,Evangeline,Elmerine,Betty and Barbara!
