Well I started the new year of 2012 with a Christmas present, an incubator! I was just going to hatch eggs once for the experience of it... and haven't stopped since! 3 incubators later, I have learned a type of math I never knew existed and the only kind I'm good at- chicken math! I now have a variety of feathered friends. I've suffered many losses and endured heartbreak but It has been a worthwhile journey that I have been able to share with my daughter who has named most of them herself.

The Boys

My flock currently has three boys in charge, cochin brothers that have grown on me. These three are sweet natured and do not squabble too seriously or bother the girls too much while still getting the job done. They were eggs I got from a Millie Fleur Breeding project from this site in September of 2013! They have grown a lot from the little fluffkins that hatched into attractive roos.

The Ladies

The top hen of the pecking order in the flock and certainly high up in my heart is my EE Parker.

And here is the Columbian Rock Bantam Lucy, a good mother but not the most clever of the flock.

Next up are the three sisters, mixes from two of my favorite and most missed birds, a Sultan and frizzled d'uccle. Jackdaw is certainly a unique chicken in the fact that she can fly quite well! I'm not talking the 15 -20 foot flap you expect either. That girl can makes loops around the house and keep in the air for a substantial amount of time for a chicken! Her identical sisters Mamba and Widow are not quite so inclined and are much more reserved and skittish.

Of course you can't forget the lovely and gentle Creole Polish Aino or Goldilocks.....

Or the frizzled polish diva Dolly!

While we are on big headed chicken fros, here is Karma, easily the fastest of them running. She might be part roadrunner in there somewhere!

I can't forget the crested cream legbar hen whose personality is so grumpy with a tendency to bite she has earned a name not so friendly to BYC so for this page I will give her the tamer nickname Brat.

The Honored Lost

The worst part about being a chicken addict is that losses happen. Sometimes things go wrong and predators get craftier every day. Here are some of the chickens that are gone but forever in my heart.
