The Balay Kubo, or Nipa Hut is a traditional Filipino house. Nipa Palm is the thatch roofing material.
My coop is in the Philipines. The coop is less than 70 yards from the ocean, with strong on-shore breezes part of the year. These winds bring destruction from salt and are unpleasant if you are trapped in them. In designing the coop I wanted good ventilation but the ability to block the wind from the chickens s they go about their normal chicken life inside the coop and yard. The other consideration is making them dog and rat proof. Rats live in the coconut trees and we have 290 of them.
Here is the google view of the land. The coop will be below the smaller blue structure on the left of our compound. It needs to be as close as tolerable to our gardener's house so he can watch over them at night and remove the temptation of 2 legged predators.
We felled and milled three coconut trees that were going to be an issue for the construction with falling branches and coconuts creating havoc. A local guy with a chainsaw milled the lumber on the spot. I ordered everything from 2x6x16 to 4x4x8 to 2x2x16. Normally they just drop the tree but when it is gusty, they remove the crown and then fell the 100+ foot trunk.
I tried to use as much local material as possible.
We used hardwood posts for the base. the internal area is 16 x 8, made into a duplex. The floor is split bamboo that has a 6-8 inch diameter. The siding is the edge off cuts of milled hardwood. the roof is nipa palm we purchased from a town by a major river where nipa grows.
The run has a row of hollow blocks the galvanized iron sheet. Rats cannot climb it.

We just need to clean up. paint the egg boxes and install the ramps.
