Sandbox roost !

I have used a poop tray filled with PDZ (Stall Fresh) for the last 5 years. It has kept my coops easy to clean and no oder. The PDZ is a natural mineral called Zoelyte which has the ability to attract ammonia which is the smell that is given off by chicken poop. We have two coops with a PDZ and sand mix filled poop tray. Makes for easy cleaning.

My whole coop is a sandbox, so I know this tray will make your life much easier...and your coop cleaner, too.

Have a tray - fill it with sawdust. When it gets yucky, into the compost heap it goes.

Our coop originally had a sand area under the roost but we removed the sand and replaced it with pine shavings after several months. The bottom of the sand became very wet as the moisture from the poo sinks to the bottom of the tray and stays wet even when you scoop the solids out on a daily basis. After a short while it also began to stink. I tried turning the sand to let it dry out but it was caked at the bottom due to the poo moisture. With it getting pooed on nightly, it never had time to fully dry out. The sand became very heavy with the moisture and I feared it would make the tray collapse. I removed the sand and put it in our garden and am very happy with the pine shavings. Much less work with the pine shavings, too. I think sand may work best on a dirt floor. While everyone is different, sand just wasn't for me.

I use similar, but as mentioned above, filled it with sweet PDZ, no smell, does not stay wet and sink to the bottom. wonderful stuff. can be composted.

I use sand too, they dont sell PDZ here. It keeps it nice and clean, I scoop out the droppings with a frying net. When it starts to smell like ammonia I just replace the sand.
