The water bottle holds it in place . The glue stops it from potentially moving. I first built this while my companions were waiting in the car...It worked as designed. I later glued the piece of pipe in the bucket so I had less parts to lose...
That pretty cool. At first I wondered why the replacement handle. But I'm thinking it's to carry while the jug is in place. Issue with my 5 gal hanging 1's is having it at the right height for different birds, but also the weight when full full is warping the bucket and eventually that handle attachment will fail. So this won't fill itself via the rain, which wasn't your intention. Only thing I might suggest is another head hole for your ladies. Did you need to sand the plastic a little to smooth the edges? Good job, keeping it simple and being creative.

Actually, the single hole seems sufficient for my 12 or so birds. They don’t line up waiting.
The replacement handle is so I could lift the bucket with the water in it as you guessed.
Any plastic shavings remaining after cutting the whole really aren’t sharp, I remember simply rubbing them off with my fingers.
What a wonderful idea! Question though: how do you fit the water bottle into the tube inside the pail without losing copious amounts of water in the process? Do you install the pail over the bottle, then flip it upside-down?
Have you tried this idea of yours on smaller water bottle models, like 1-3 gallon bottles? I'm asking because I almost always topple over when I try to raise the 5 gallon bottle, and have to roll it around for transport instead...
The water bottle sits on top of the tube acting as a spacer, keeping the water bottle off the bottom of the pail. The water bottle has a small opening. Once inverted, it takes a few seconds to fill the bottom of the pail, more than sufficient time to avoid any spillage.
I have not tried with smaller bottles since there is no need to fill the 5 gallon bottle completely.
This is brilliant - and looks quite easy to achieve. I hope someone has built this who lives in Canada / the north and can suggest some way to keep it from freezing?
