does it spill alot?

I did something similar, I drilled holes in the side of a 5 gallon bucket near the bottom. Then I put a funnel narrow end up in the bottom of the bucket. The whole bucket sits on a couple of 2x4's in a galvanized pan which sits on a couple of 4x4's to keep woodchips out of it. I too have to give it a good shake once in a while but not very often. I only feed this way in the winter months and I think it works great.

How do you keep the food from getting wet when it rains?

This is a really good idea. I have a ton of walmart buckets around so I think I'll try this.

That's great, I am trying to figure out something like that that I can leave out in the rain. I get so tired of running out and grabbing my feed so it doesnt get soaked and then go mushy. I am so afraid of getting my gals and boys sick. I have 20* chickens and chicks not all in the same coop and my coops are of different types and the main one has netting on top not alot of dry space. This is the one that contains more of gals than the others. The others are kept dry. I have 10 girls in this space.
