Fayetteville North Carolina Chicken Ordinance

Not sure, but in 2011 the Fayetteville Council passed an ordinance lowering the number to 4 for chickens. Did that change? I am looking for that answer now, along with bee keeping info

They tried to pass it, it got a lot of protest from local residents and they backed down. To my knowledge it is currently back-burnered until further notice. The last article I read in the Observer kind of had the tone that they had given up one the new ordinances altogether. Thank you for the article and sorry for the delayed response. I keep six chickens anyway since my neighbors don't mind. Good to know I am ok with that number. I talked with the Cumberland county Bee Keepers Association and they say it is allowed. I am attending a free class they put on this fall.

I spoke with animal control again today while they were in my neighborhood looking for a reported stray dog. Apparently there isn't an effort to get the number 10 reduced anymore so we are good for awhile. I updated my Bert's Chicks page on facebook with the information. Thanks again for the info.

You're quite welcome, I'm glad to hear that's not something the city still has in the works. Would hate to get rid of any of our little girls!

Is that for real or..? My neighbors and I have way more then 10 hens, and about 20 roosters.

The rule is 10 and there is no restriction on roosters unless someone complains about them crowing, then its considered a nuisance.

Does anyone get "grandfathered" in to continue own rosters after Counsel says no rosters?

Because, my neighbor's 2 rosters are literally driving me insane crowing every morning toward my bedroom window at 4:30 AM.

Oh, if anyone can tell me who to contact first, that would be fantastic. I don't mind the hens just rosters. I have spoken with my neighbor nicely without prevail toward rosters going away. Thank you in advance.

I also Live in Fayetteville NC, The rule to my knowledge is 10 (for rabbits, chickens, quail/ ducks) within city limits. I have never gotten a direct answer on roosters other than referring to nuisance animals, but there are plenty of dogs that are just as loud, and sometimes hens that make more racket for their egg song than some roosters wearing crow collars lol. But from my experience nuisance animal can also refer to if the neighbors call for complaints of smell or flies. Sooooooo personally, I have way more than 10 chickens and I just do everything I can to not give my neighbors a reason to complain, I have fly traps every where, I compost everything, My rooster wears his collar, I don't advertise that I have a Ton of Fresh eggs on my front lawn. My blessing is I live on a larger piece of property so I can move my coop further away from property lines. The ONLY animal I have ever found to be impermeable to the Nuisance animal rule are the domestic "out door" cats. They can do what they want, and owners have no accountability cause....... cats, It drives me nuts! (ok off the soap box). As long as no one complains it's not a problem..... until they do. Form good relationships with neighbors, Good fences make those relationships even better ( in most cases), and just enjoy your flock and care for them the best ways you know how. just my opinion not hard fast recommendation I don't want people in trouble following my foot steps, proceed at your own risk.

Unfortunately the only ordinance to contact is animal control the problem is, if they have any issues with their flock (too many) or how they keep them if not to animal control standards it potentially puts your neighbor at risk for having to get rid of or have the rest of their flock/have them confiscated as well. So it can become a touchy situation. I don’t know what part of town you are in but recently animal control posted on Facebook about confiscating a rooster and reminded the general public that they aren’t allowed in Cumberland county. It’s up to you how you choose to handle it, but I would at least let them know if that’s your option that you are at that breaking point of either they do something or you will have animal control do something.
