Originating in the U.S. during the colonial period was the Dominique, also known as Dominicker. This is literally America's oldest breed of chicken. Now you would think because of the long history we have with this breed that it would be more popular. You would think more folks would love This great American breed.
Sadly, this just isn't the case. In fact the Dominique breed is on the conservatives "watch list" with 5000 or less being bred every year.The breed is considered a "rare" heritage breed.
With so many popular breeds out there, what makes this one so special? I have some of my favorite features listed here:
.Autosexing- males are always lighter and have bright yellow beaks & legs
.Soft barred colored plumage
.Great foraging skills
Rose Comb- helps the breed avoid frostbite
.Calm and docile
.Great for showing
Those are some of my favorite qualites. I would love to hear yours. I know there are some true fans of the Dominique out there. The picture attached to this article is of my boy "Atticus" . He already shows great potential in beauty and personality. If you are interested in a starter flock I will have both eggs and chicks available in the Spring.
