Hi everyone.
I was offered free Silkie pair of chickens. I love Silkies but gave all mine away when I went back to work. So this was great since I was already set up. When I arrived to pick them up, they were Cochins. No matter I had a lovely boy who I wanted to mate with a frizzle, but sadly she was killed by a neighbors dog. So on to the real story! As we were about to leave the man tells me he has a couple of ducks he tried to rehome but they flew back, did I want them? Oh no I said DH would never approve. But I had to look! Laying together on the dirt was the sweetest old couple. Muscovy, I had not had ducks before but did look into them years ago and decided on Muscovy Ducks. DH droned on something about no pond and I let it go. HERE THEY ARE! Gotta be a Jesus thing I thought. So yes they got to come home with me! Oh by the way they have 2 ducklings. I did not see those guys the man pointed over to one of his goat shelters and huddled together the cutest little duckies hiding behind the goat. Pack em up we cannot split up the family.
Day one : We got home safely and I had my old Silkie pen 8x10 chain link dog pen wrapped in chicken wire. An old water thing our dog (RIP Poodle) used as a pool. So I put that in with them and a dog house in case of rain. They seemed happy.
Slowly we have been discovering their personalities and we really enjoy them! Even DH!
But those poor babies did nothing but hide! So I watched they were hiding from the Drake!
So I made a small area off the front of the pen for them to play and eat during the day.
Wally (the Drake) still terrorized them at night!
We made a bigger Day pen but it is still not night time safe.
But Wally had proven if he could catch those babies, he would hurt (or even worse) them! So I decided in my human mind that Wally was going to get his own apartment
So I started like this .
I wanted him close but not able to touch the littles.
I looked around and a few pallets and odd boards later Wally had an apartment
He was not as pleased as I was,but he was next to Wanda and the ducklings were safe at night from him and he is safe too!
So now we exchange play times and Wanda visits Wally when she wants to but he has limited to no beak time with the ducklings who are getting to be so big and funny.
Here are some pics.
They all get time in the big little pool.
UPDATE
Wally after swim
Pool Party Wanda and the ducklings Waldo and Wendi
Wally still has to be apart right now since he still wants to "get Waldo" They grow so fast! Waldo is as big if not bigger than Wally now.
UPDATE: Waldo is missing!
New lady added today. Her flock mates were taken by a bobcat she will meet the flock tomorrow I hope they get along. I don't like it when they are lonely.
She doesn't have a name yet. DS thinks the W names are overdone. I am thinking Waverly. Lol
