The Egg
Chicken eggs come in many sizes and colors but there is more to this common breakfast food then you might think.
1. Some farmers add marigolds to the feed of their chickens to make the yolks of their eggs a darker yellow.
2. An egg shell can have as many as 17,000 pores all over its surface.
3. Eggs contain lutein which helps prevent cataracts and muscle degeneration.
4. Most eggs are laid between 7 and 11am.
5. Egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contains vitamin D.
6. The edible part of a chicken’s egg is approximately 74 percent water, 12 percent protein and 11 percent fat.
7. The most yolks found in one egg was nine.
8. The white part of the egg is called the albumen. The albumen protects the developing embryo from bacteria.
9. If you spin a hard boiled egg, it will spin easily. If you spin a raw egg, the liquid with cause it to wobble.
10. Soft - shelled eggs are caused when an egg is released before it has time to develop a shell.
The Hen
Most people have hens simply because they are the ones that lay the eggs but they can also be calm, friendly pets.
1. A hen must eat four pounds of feed to produce a dozen eggs.
2. A female chicken is called a pullet until she starts laying.
3. A hen's egg color depends on the color of her earlobes. If she has red earlobes, she will lay brown eggs. If she has white earlobes, she will lay white eggs. However, the Ameraucana or Easter Egger is an exception. They have red earlobes and lay blue/green eggs.
4. When a hen goes "broody" she has decided to hatch eggs. Breeds such as the Cochin, Orpington, and Silikie make great mothers. Once she gets as many eggs as she wants, she will sit on the eggs and stop laying until the chicks hatch and are grown up.
5. It takes 25 hours for en egg to be made in the hen.
6. The most eggs laid by one hen in one day is 7.
7. A mother hen can communicate with her chicks when they are still in the egg.
8. Hens sometimes will crow.
9. Most hens start laying eggs at 5-6 months old.
10. Hens are pretty brave when it comes to their eggs or babies and they will defend them from predators.
The Rooster
A rooster is not needed for a hen to lay eggs but he does fertilize them and his proud crowing makes a farm feel like a farm.
1. A rooster crows in the morning to announce to his enemies that he survived the night. However, most roosters crow throughout the day.
2. An immature male chicken is called a cockerel.
3. Roosters serve as lookouts for the flock and will protect them from predators.
4. Chickens have three eye lids for each eye. An upper eye lid, a lower eye lid, and a nictitating membrane. When a rooster crows, the nictitating membrane closes or partially closes. This is because when a rooster is crowing, his head and throat are vulnerable. If the upper eye lid were closed, they would be even more vulnerable to predators.
5. If a rooster finds something good to eat, he will often call his hens over to eat first.
6. Roosters preform a special dance in order to impress the hens.
7. Roosters can crow when they are sitting or crouched into a tight space.
8. Roosters can recognize over 200 different chickens.
9. The breed with the longest crow is the Drenica. The Drenica rooster has a crow that lasts at least 15 seconds.
10. The heaviest chicken breed is the Jersey Giant. The Jersey Giant rooster can weigh 13 pounds.
