This were you would come if you want to see the birds Im working with and ones maybe I no longer have. I will be making a special dedicated portion of this page with my work on my salmon marans. I currenlty have BBS Marans, 1 black birchon Maran hen, 3 First generation Salmon Hens 1 silver and 2 golden and few first generation chicks I will keep again this year growing out, Wheaten marans 3 older hens, 1 younger pullet, and 1 Roo young, Silkies most bearded assourted colors, Call Ducks assourted colors, Pair of Lavendar Splash Sebbie geese less then year old, and tri of pet Rouen Ducks. Im currently looking to add Swedish flower hen chickens and more birchon marans and maybe another line of BBS Marans.
I started out with big mixed layer flock and have since found breeds that I like personally for one reason or another. I tend to go for breeds with allot of personality but also look at factors including meat, foraging abilities, motherlyness, and just striking to me.
I started out with marans the hard way. Purchased lots of eggs from many breeders from varies places and got very bad hatch results and what did hatch later found out was very subpar via the breed standard. Then I found a local person or somewhat local 1 state away but still pretty close. Purchased several adult birds from him, Lots of eggs, and many chicks. I weeded through them keeping what I thought was good and grew from there. I stopped purchasing eggs and only traded. For me it was less risky because we would both be out a small amount if something went wrong. In the last couple years I have learned allot about the marans breed and have meet some very nice people more so on the marans yahoo groups that have been very helpful. Marans seem to be a very touchy subject for many people so it is hard to find people willing to give good advice, rather then tell you just to sell all and start over. Marans are very new to having a good guildline to go by when breeding and everyone seems to like something different. All I can say is if you choose to have them please do just sell all your birds because a few say too. There are allot of things you can work on and improve over time, Yes some are harder then others to fix like bad combs. I personally have never kept any that have had this issue, I really don't think Im experienced enough to rid a line of that issue.
